How you can help

[edit]

No article that currently exists is in compliance with the standards. You can help by adding to the existing articles and reformatting them to the project standards.

[edit]

Please feel free to list your new Hersheypark-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them should be suggested for the Did you know? box on the Main Wikipedia page. DYN has a 72 hr. time limit from the creation of the article.

Structure

[edit]

Article Naming Standards

[edit]

The article name shall be Ride Name. If the name conflicts with another existing ride, than it shall be called Ride Name (Hersheypark).

Project Sample

Tasks

[edit]

Standardization

[edit]
  • Moving articles to the proper titles, see Article Naming Standards
  • Adding the infobox to articles, especially those using the old subst'd stat sheet (which should no longer be used).

Adopt an article

[edit]

Similar to the Collaboration of the week, but on a smaller scale, you might want to "adopt" an article. This would involve doing the research, writing, and picture-taking (if possible) for either a non-existent article or a stub. Of course, everyone else can still edit an adopted article, and you can work on other things too, but the idea is to find a focus for a while, to try and build up the number of quality articles the Project has produced.

{{Project U.S. Roads East}} Welcome to the Pennsylvania State Highways WikiProject! Please feel free to contribute on how to improve articles on the talk page above.

Title

[edit]

The Pennsylvania State Highways WikiProject

Scope

[edit]

This WikiProject aims primarily to encourage participation in creating or expanding articles about state highways in Pennsylvania. This project also aims to establish standards relating to the display of information in these articles.

An article describing the logic and basic history of the Pennsylvania Highway System is necessary to accompany the current List of State Routes in Pennsylvania and List of Pennsylvania numbered highways article. This article should feature information regarding the state's Freeway and Expressway System, Scenic Highways, and other worthy material.

Routes Worthy of Articles

[edit]

The following highways can have entire articles dedicated to them:

  • Routes that are constructed, traversable, state-maintained, and signed with its own route number.
  • Routes that are partly constructed or partly signed.
  • Deleted routes with significant information worthy of an article.
  • Interstates that run entirely in Pennsylvania (mostly spur and loop routes). Ideally, these should also be part of this WikiProject.

For routes that have been entirely deleted and whose number has not been reused, these can be merged onto a single article, Deleted Pennsylvania state highways.

For routes that are entirely unconstructed, these can be merged onto another article, Unconstructed Pennsylvania state highways.

How you can help

[edit]

No article that currently exists is in compliance with the standards. You can help by adding to the existing articles and reformatting them to the project standards.

Structure

[edit]

Route articles should be named "Pennsylvania Route N" where N is the route number. Route shields should be in SVG format and stored at Wikimedia Commons and should be named "PA-X.svg", where X is the route number.

Infobox

[edit]

The Infobox to use for this project is the Template:Infobox road template.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete routebox on the article page, just place this before any other text and fill in the variables.

{{Infobox road
|state=
|type=
|route=
|length_mi=
|length_round=
|length_ref=

|terminus_a=
|junction=
|direction_b=
|terminus_b=
|counties=
|previous_type=
|previous_route=
|next_type=
|next_route=
}}

US 22 in West Hanover Township
East end US 322 US 422 in Hershey
Location
CountryUnited States
StatePennsylvania
CountiesDauphin

For the above parameters here's what you should fill in:

  • state: PA
  • type: PA for state routes
  • route: This is the number of the route the article is about
  • length_mi: This is the length of the route in miles. If you specify beyond integers (i.e. add a decimal value) you will need to set the following paramater, length_round
  • length_round: If your value for length_mi is a whole number, you can omit this. Otherwise it needs to be set to the decimal precision of the length_mi paramater.
  • length_ref: To do what a good article writer should, provide your reference for the length of the route using standard <ref> method. For example: <ref name=pah>[http://www.pahighways.com/state/PA701-750.html#PA739 Pennsylvania Highways - Pennsylvania Route 739]</ref>
  • established: This is the date the route was commissioned or assigned to its current alignment
  • direction_a: This should be either south or west to keep in accordance with the U.S. Roads parent project, which lists termini and junctions in progression travelling from West to East and South to North.
  • terminus_a: This is where the route begins and is either at the southern terminus or western terminus.
  • junction: Any major junctions along the route should be listed here. If more than one is listed, use a <br> to break the lines
  • direction_b: The opposite of direction_a
  • terminus_b: where the route ends, in accordance with the guidelines set forth with terminus_a
  • counties: a list of counties that the route enters
  • previous_type: This is the type of route that preceeds the current one in the system. The value for this is: Interstate, US, or PA for Interstates, U.S. Routes and other Pennsylvania routes, respectively. Only current routes or decommissioned routes with articles should be included in the browse.
  • previous_route: The number of the route preceding this one
  • next_type: Same as previous_type but for the route following this one
  • next_route: The number of the route succeeding this one

Important notes regarding the routebox: For the previous and next route types, remember to list them in order of priority. If you do an infobox for PA 79, the following route would be I-80, not PA-80. PA-80 would succeed I-80 as there is no U.S. 80 in Pennsylvania. The precedence is as follows: U.S. Interstate, U.S. Route, Pennsylvania route.

So, by completing the infobox as follows, you'll get a routebox like the one to the right.

{{Infobox road
|state=PA
|type=PA
|route=39
|length_mi=20
|length_round=
|length_ref=<ref name=pah>[http://www.pahighways.com/state/PA1-50.html#PA39 Pennsylvania Highways - Pennsylvania Route 39]</ref>

Main section

[edit]

Untitled section that describes the route. Depending on the route this section may just name the direction (W/E or S/N) and termination points, or may go into considerable detail. However, the majority of detail, such as progress by town or county, should be reserved for the next section.

Route description

[edit]

This section is for describing the route itself and its progression across the counties of Pennsylvania. This section should be broken up by counties using third-level headlines. If the route is contained entirely in one county, then it is not necessary to give said county a third-level headline. Regardless of the route's length, progression should be described from south to north, west to east.

Communities along the route

[edit]

List of communities, which can range from small hamlets to large cities, along the route. Depending on the length of the route this may include only major communities, or just the few hamlets the route passes through.

Major intersections or Exit list

[edit]

The contents of this section may vary by route. Refer to the table below for the appropriate section header and further instructions.

Route composition Section header title What should be here
All grade-separated interchanges; no at-grade intersections Exit list An exit list designed in accordance with the Interstate exit list guide
Mixture of grade-separated interchanges and at-grade intersections Major intersections or Exit list Depending on the route in question, either a junction table or a "combo" exit list featuring exits and intersections can be used.
All at-grade intersections; no grade-separated interchanges Major intersections A junction table for at-grade intersections as specified below

Junction table

[edit]

This section is for listing all of the intersections, both actual junctions and over/underpasses, that this route has with PA traffic routes (1-999), Interstates and U.S. routes.

This is the basic syntax you need to get a complete junction table on the article page, just place this in the Major Intersections section and fill in the variables. An example of a complete table is at Pennsylvania Route 18.

{{PAinttop}}
{{PAint
|county=
|cspan=
|location=
|lspan=
|type=
|mile=
|road=
|notes=
}}
{{PAintbtm}}

For additional entries, use this:

{{PAint
|location=
|lspan=
|type=
|mile=
|road=
|notes=
}}

For the above parameters, here's what you should fill in:

  • county: name of the county without wiki markup - the county is automatically linked by the template
  • cspan: number of rows the county spans - if value=1, omit this parameter
  • location: name of the location without wiki markup - the location is automatically linked by the template
  • lspan: number of rows the location spans - if value=1, omit this parameter
  • area: (optional for use with location) used to disambiguate between town, city, village, etc.
  • ctdab: (optional for use with location) further disambiguation by county (Brighton in New York is an example where this tag would be used)
  • location_special: (replaces location) location where the junction is located - use for custom entries only. Wiki markup is required.
  • type: noaccess, mplex (for concurrency), decomd (for decommissioned), unbuilt, closed
  • mile: milepost of the junction. If unknown, leave blank.
  • road: road that the article route intersects at this junction. To generate the proper coding, use {{subst:PAint/XX}}, where XX is:
    • PAint/PA:{{subst:PAint/PA|(route number)|(size of shield in pixels)}}
    • PAint/US:{{subst:PAint/US|(route number)|(size of shield in pixels)}}
    • PAint/IN:{{subst:PAint/IN|(Interstate number)|(size of shield in pixels)}}.
  • street: (optional for use with location) Used to break up monotony in sections where the route has the same town name six or more times over (see NY 33 for an example of appropriate usage).
  • notes: any notes regarding that junction.

Any parameter which is empty can be omitted.

Attractions

[edit]

Major attractions along the road.

History

[edit]

History of the route. This can be as brief as a sentence or as extensive as a few paragraphs.

Miscellanea

[edit]

Put all oddities, miscellanea, etc., including any recent projects to improve/upgrade the road, the road in popular culture, etc., if applicable.
