Letter to Rock & Folk about Robert Lelièvre

I was born in Denmark, but I have lived in France for the last 17 years. For a long time I have wondered how it can be that one of the most talented rock and folk musicians ever to come out of this country, Robert Lélievre (Pan; Cy, Maia & Robert), is virtually unknown here in his homeland, while abroad a small cult of followers – including myself – are highly dedicated to his music? I feel that the time has come to remedy this great injustice, and who are better placed to carry out this job than my favorite French rock and folk magazine?

An Australian fan and friend of mine, R.H., has published an incredibly rich fan tribute website about Lelièvre and Pan. This goldmine of information also contains a good many rare pictures as well as interviews with the original members of Pan. The site also contains musical clips from all stages of his career, including the two Pan albums and the never released solo albums.

I sincerely hope that someone in Rock & Folk´s editorial staff will take interest in this humble email and listen to the aforementioned Pan album in particular. If you like what you hear (and I can not imagine it otherwise), then hopefully you will assist me and Mr. H. in help spreading word about Robert Lélievre´s music by writing a feature in your magazine, so he will finally be able to obtain the recognition in his home country that he so rightfully deserves. I honestly believe that he was a generation ahead of his contemporary French musicians. In 1970, when Johnny Halliday and Michel Polnareff were the closest thing France came to real rock music, Lelièvre wrote, sang and played his own progressive blues/rock compositions on record, and very few people in France were ever aware. Until very soon, hopefully.

Je continue à me demander comment il est possible que l'un des plus talentueux musiciens de rock/folk francais, Robert Lelièvre, est quasiment inconnu ici dans sa patrie, tandis qu'à l'étranger un petit nombre de disciples—dont je fais partie—est très dévoué à sa musique. Je pense que le moment est venu de remédier à cette injustice.

Un fan Australien de mes amis, RH, a fait un site web incroyablement riche en hommage à Lelièvre. Cette mine d'informations contient également bon nombre de photos ainsi que des entretiens avec les membres originaux de Pan. Le site contient aussi des clips musicaux de toutes les étapes de sa carrière, dont les deux albums avec Pan et ses deux albums solo, malheureusement jamais sortis.

J'espère sincèrement que quelqu'un de la rédaction de Rock & Folk prêtera attention à cet humble e-mail et écoutera en particulier les morceaux de Pan. Si vous aimez ce que vous entendez, alors j'espère que vous nous aiderez à faire connaître la musique de Robert Lelièvre à travers un article dans votre magazine, pour qu'il obtienne enfin la reconnaissance qu'il mérite dans son pays natal. Je crois honnêtement qu'il avait une génération d'avance sur ses contemporains français.
