Katie (Katherine) Cappiello (born September 21, 1980) is an American playwright, and theater teacher, director and producer. She is best known for her work in writing and directing social justice plays around feminist themes, with a special emphasis on rape and sexual assault. Among her work are the plays Slut: The Play, Now That We’re Men, A Day in The Life and Her Story, Uncut.

Early and Personal Life[edit]

Capiello was born in 1980 in Brockton, Massachusetts to mother Jane Cappeillo and father ____ Cappiello, both public school teachers. She attended Brockton High School, where she graduated with the class of 1999. In ____, Cappiello moved to New York City to attend New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where she graduated in the class of 2003 with a BFA in Theater and a minor in Women's Studies. She also studied Political Science, Middle Eastern Studies and Art History in Florence, Italy. In her time at NYU, Cappiello studied at The Lee Strasberg Theater and Film Institute, where she studied under the direction of teachers including Geoffrey Horne and Bill Balzac.

Career[edit]

Along with her partner Meg McInerney, Cappiello established The Arts Effect theater school. Cappiello was the Artistic Director for the award-winning program from 2008-2016.

The Arts Effect[edit]

The Arts Effect was designed to guide children and teens in the development and maintenance of a strong acting technique and skill set. It used Method-based technique popularized in the United States by Lee Strasberg to teach children how to bring honesty and naturalism to their acting. Teachers at The Arts Effect used tools such as sense memory, scene and character study, script analysis and improvisation to "create REAL life on stage and film" [1]

The All-Girl Theater Company[edit]

A integral part of The Arts Effect theater school was The All-Girl Theater Company, an unique class in which girls ages 9-18 were encouraged to come together and artistically explore their world. The Company tackled subjects from the over-sexualization of girls in culture to sex trafficking; from the intense presence of social media in girls' lives to reproductive rights/girls' health.[1] The Arts Effect All-Girl Theater Company worked to reach thousands of girls and boys, most notably through the touring of the critically-acclaimed and award-winning plays written by Cappiello. These plays include Keep Your Eyes Open [2], which actress Amy Poehler called "so funny, so touching, and so REAL!"[3] - the play won the 2008 NY International Fringe Festival Most Outstanding Ensemble Award[2]; Facebook Me, which feminist Gloria Steinem called "Smart, daring and refreshingly honest -- a necessary and powerful play!)[4] - the play was an Official Selection at the 2011 NY International Fringe Festival and SLUT: The Play (more info below).
