Petru Ilieșu (Ilieș Petru Nicolae, born September 12, 1951, Timișoara, Romania) is a writer[1](poet[2], essayist, English translator and publicist).
As a writer he made his debut as a poet in the early 70's, the first volume Pastel H being published in 1978, at Litera Publishing House, Bucharest.
Biography
[edit]He graduated from Eftimie Murgu High School in Timișoara and the Faculty of Philology of the University of Timișoara. After graduating, he worked as a librarian at the Timiș County Library until 1994. From 1990 until now he led the Timișoara Foundation `89, which he founded since December 1989. In parallel he worked as a publicist (being one of the founders of the Timișoara newspaper). In 2003 he founded Planetarium Publishing House.
Involvement in the 1989 Romanian Revolution
[edit]Petru Ilieșu is known as one of the Romanian protesting writers with a critical activity towards the dictatorship regime in Romania during the Ceausescu period[3][4][5][6]. Influenced by the Beat generation and the Flower Power current, he staged experimental theater director (Timisoara Student House) thematic performances and published texts with a pacifist content. In 1981, he was detained and investigated by the Securitate as the author of an act of spreading manifestos against the Ceausescu regime. In the summer of 1989 he sent outside Romania the poem "Open letter about my brother, Mr. Gorbachev"[7], a protest manifesto and joined as a signatory of the appeal initiated by Dan Petrescu and signed by Doina Cornea, Luca Pițu, Liviu Antonesei, Liviu Ioan Stoiciu, Alexandru Tacu, Mariana Marin and several other writers against the re-election of Ceausescu at the 14th Congress of the PCR, an appeal that appeared at the beginning of October 1989 in the international press. In December 1989 he participated in the protest movements in Timisoara, protests that triggered the anti-communist revolution and went to Bucharest to make known, as a direct witness, the demonstrations in Timisoara to determine reaction and solidarity with the demonstrators.
He was arrested together with the writer Nicolae Prelipceanu and investigated by the Security and then forced to return, on an established route, to Timișoara. Back in Timisoara, he was part of the first revolutionary structures, from which he retired in February 1990.
