cup-bop
food cup-bop

Cup rice is one of the Korean dishes, selling rice and side dishes in a plastic or paper cup container the size of a cup noodle. IN Noryangjin, famous as an institutes street in Korea, cup-bop has become famous for its cheap price and its simple but reliable advantages. In the early 2000s, Noryangjin mainly handled snacks such as hot dogs. However, many students came out to eat at the same time, so they always had to line up in front of the restaurant. In line with these demands, food trucks have found food that can be used as a substitute for meals, and the effort is made with cup rice.[1] Stir-fry the ingredients in advance in a large frying pan, and when the order comes, put the ingredients on the rice and go out with the egg. It was quick to eat, and because of the satisfaction of having 'eat' rather than other snacks, it was very popular among students and was successful. Food trucks selling cup rice increased, and menus changed little by little. Various menus have emerged to satisfy the tastes of various people.

However, as it became more and more famous, there were some franchisees near the school. The main consumers are those who have to eat a meal at a low price and those who have to settle their own meals.[3]

Disadvantages and Problems[edit]

  1. The nutrition is disproportionate. It is a high-carbohydrate, high-fat, high-salt food. It is a food that is eaten with sausages, eggs, and meat on top of rice, so carbohydrates. However, relatively few vegetables are available, so there is a dearth of vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. Especially since it is a high fat food, there is a problem that cannot digest well.[4]
  2. Hygienic management s is not easy because of the food truck characteristics that are always located along the busy street. Especially since food is stored pre-cooked, it is easier to reproduce bacteria than other food truck foods. Therefore, it can cause enteritis.[5]
  3. Under South Korea's law on the labeling of origin of agricultural and fisheries products, the country of origin for beef, pork and chicken in cup rice is obliged to be listed on the menu, but few food trucks keep it. Cup-bop food trucks are not authorized stores by the Metropolitan Government , so they are not obligated to abide by the law, they don't pay taxes.

Commercialization in Food companies[edit]

Starting from Noryangjin's food truck, you can now find a shop that sells cup rice all over the streets of Korea, and a food company also sells cup rice by making it instant food. Convenience stores and famous Korean food companies are also launching a variety of cup rice products. In particular, Korea`s leading convenience store GS25[6], and food company Ottogi [7]are making great efforts to expand its presence abroad. [8]
