Appachu Kavi – a Note on the Name

The correct and full name of this playwright poet is ‘Haradaasa Appaneravanda Appachcha Kavi. In his literary works he wrote his name as ‘Appachcha’ (with stress on the second and third syllables) and not as ‘Appachchu’.

Sri BD Ganapathy, one of the renowned literary exponents of Karnataka, who wrote in Kannada, Kodava and English languages, spells the name as Appacha1 , but not as Appachu.

Lt Col K C Ponnappa (Retd) also spells the name as Appacha and refers to the poet as ‘the Poet Laureate of Coorg’2.

Further, Sri K P Muththanna wrote his name as ‘Appachcha’ and not as “Appachchu’3.

Since the name in Kannada script is written with stress on the second and third syllables, namely, ‘ppa’ and ‘chcha’, it is reasonable to spell his name as “Appachcha”.
