Discovery[edit]

Persephonella marina was first isolated in 1999 at a depth of 2570 meters near a sulfidic chimney. The sulfidic chimney, or 'Q-vent', was located 9 degrees north and 104 degrees west on a region called the East Pacific Rise. The environment was entirely too harsh for humans and required a submarine to obtain the samples. Once collected and carried to the surface, the samples were isolated in a N2 environment for extraction.
