From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cairo Shell is a replacement shell for the Microsoft Windows operating systems. Like other shell alternatives, it replaces the default Explorer interface. Cairo strives to be a revolutionary desktop environment for Windows XP and Windows Vista. The Cairo Development teams wants to develop a new desktop experience that provides increased productivity and surpasses current user interface standards. The shell replacement aims to focus on stability, performance, and productivity.

Windows shell replacements have been in development for some time. Cairo Shell aims to be a leader in shell replacements. A shell is an environment for your computer that allows you to browse files, launch applications, and interact with your computer. The current Windows shell includes the taskbar with the start menue and the window borders in either XP or vista. The current windows shell for windows xp and vista is explorer.exe.

Milestone 1 (Private Alpha)[edit]

The first release of Cairo Shell was released on January 15, 2009 to a limited group selected by the Cairo Development Team. The first private alpha will last 1 month for the testers.

Features[edit]

MenuBar[edit]

The Cairo Shell MenuBar is meant to replace the features of the current explorer.exe taskbar. Files, Folders, and Programs can be executed directly from the menu bar. The development team is striving to make the MenuBar customizable so each user can create the most effective user interface for their own needs. Favorite programs can be placed under the 'Programs' label and numerous folders can be added to the menu bar to make desired files extremely accessible.

Active Search[edit]

An active search bar is another added feature implemented in the MenuBar. Users will have the ability to search and execute files directly from the desktop rather than searching through the numerous files on the computer.

Future Plans[edit]

The Cairo Developers plan to continue progressing in their developments. They will continue releasing builds and recieving feedback from testers in order to make a better shell replacement.
