Navdurga & Mahishasur

Once there was a demon named Rambha, the demon prayed to lord Brahma. When he appeared in front of his eyes, Rambha asked him that his son shall be one of the strongest demons that ever lived. Meanwhile a few months later, Rambha fell in love with a female buffalo, Mahishi. They had a child together who was half demon and half buffalo. He could shapshift into either he wanted at any time. Soon his Parents passed away due to the Gods. Thriving for revenge, he created a plan. Mahishasur, the demon buffalo prayed to Lord Bhramha. When the Lord arrived, he asked for the boon that no man could kill him. Of course he forgot that a women could end him since his mind kept thinking that women are weak. With his new aquired boon, he terrorized the Gods and mortals. Afraid all the Gods ran to Lord Shiva. He said I can't help, then they all ran to Lord Vishnu. Even he couldn't help. Then suddenly, a blinding light emerged from the trinity and entered inside the body of Goddess Parvati. Parvati is the Goddess of gentleness and motherhood but now she was going to be the Goddess of war! Parvati was an incarnation of Adi-Parashakti. She had nine principle incarnations that were meant to flourish the world. Parvati went to fight the demon. At first Mahishasur was enchanted by Parvati's beauty. She told him that if he beat her in a war she would marry him. It was the first day of their war and she took her first form. Shailputri, the daughter of the mountain. Shailputri rode in on a bull, she had two arms and in one hand she held a lotus flower and in one hand she held a trident. Holding her trident she attacked Mahishasur. After the first day she took her second form, Bhramhacharini. In one hand she held sacred beads and in the other she held holy water. She sprinkled her holy water on Mahishasur, every time the water touched his body, it burned his skin. On the third day she took the form of Chandraghanta. In this form she was riding on a tiger and had eight arms. On her head she had the moon and in her main hand she held her main weapon, a bell. Mahishasur charged towards her and she rung her bell. With the pure sound of the bell, it turned his soldiers into dust. On the fourth day she took the form of Kushmanda. In this form she was riding on a tiger and had ten arms. Her main weapon was a mace. She jumped on top of the demon and struck his head with her club/mace. On the fifth day she took the form of Skandamata. Skanda, also known as Murugan and Kartikeya was her son. She rode in on a lion and had two arms. In one arm she held a lotus flower and in the other she held her son. Her lion attacked all the demons while Skanda shot arrows at the demons. On the sixth day she took the form of Katyayini. This form of hers was a true warrior. She rode in on a lion and had two arms. In one hand she held a lotus flower to symbolize her kindness and in the other she held a sword to symbolize feirceness. Then, Mahishasur sent his brother Raktbeej. Katyayini Durga attacked him and she thought she killed him but when his blood fell on the ground, a new version of him sprouted out of the ground. Soon there were thousands of Raktbeej's. On the seventh day she took the form of Kaalratri, also known as Mahakali, Kali, Bhadrakali or Chandika. Kali held her scimitar in one hand and a bowl in the other. She took her scimitar sword and struck all the Raktbeej's. She caught all the blood in her bowl. After all of them were gone, she drank all the blood. Furious with her anger she went on a rage. All the Gods pleaded to Shiva to help them. Shiva laid in front of her in the battlefield. Soon Chandi stepped on him and realizing her mistake she stuck out her tounge. Shiva told her take your next form. On the eight day she took the form of Mahagauri. The one who is fair. She rode in on a bull and held a trident and a drum. With her drum she warded of the spirits and with her trident she pierced the demons. On the ninth night she took the form of Siddhidatri. She rode in on a chariot and had four arms. In each of her hands she held a mace, conch, lotus and she held the most deadliest weapon, the Sudharshan Chakra. With her Chakra she chopped up the whole demon army. On the tenth morning, all the nine forms combined together to create Navdurga. Durga attacked Mahishasur. By now he was in the form of Half Buffalo and half demon. Durga pounced onto him and Stabbed him with her dagger. Then with her club she smashed his head in. Finally peace was restored and the Gods thanked her. The Devi earned the name Mahishasur Mardini from the Gods and now she is one of the most worshipped Dieties in Hindu Mythology.
