History of Thai lottery Talking about history of thai lottery, Lottery was firstly introduced in China around the year 2364-2378 BC. which called “Hoi Hoi” Later, it was widespread in Thailand during the reign of the King Rama III. approximately 2378 BC.

According to trustees of the King Rama IV. was the head that cause the common lottery into Thailand since 2375 BC. because of rice shortages in the country which forced Thailand to import rice from other countries. Due to the shortage and expensive price of rice ,those poor was pleased to gain rice for their wages instead of money. Farmer said there is no tax money will be sent.

During the time of the King Rama III. It was said that the king lost all of his money because of the purchase of opium hoard. So he ordered to burn all the opium. Still there was not enough money in Thailand market. JeanHong Si Chai could explain that. He said money lost because the majority of people took their money to bury as most of them refused to spend their money. If this happened in China, they would solve the problem by lottery. Then the king ordered Jean Hong to set up lottery in Thailand.

How to play lottery in China, they made a small 34 labels written famous ancient people and each using different name. To win the lottery, a dealer would choose only one label and put it into a wooden tube and hang it on a roof. The others would predict the right name out of 34 names. if they won, the dealer was to paid 30 times or else those would lost their money to the dealer. Later, the dealer added more two lottery numbers to be 36 numbers in total but paid the same. In China, scenes was set around the lottery plants to draw. Three kind of marks included human portrait, Chinese fonts and animal picture were applied.

Now, when the lottery came out to play in Thailand. Because Thai people were unable to read and speak Chinese, Mr. Hong replaced Chinese characters with Thai characters which contain 44 letters and 36 of them were used and the rest of 8 characters were left behind including ฎ ฏ ฐ ฑ ฒ ณ ศ ษ and was called lottery “ก ข.” “ก ข” lottery had become the major of government revenue. The auction started in every year. Anyone who offer the highest bid would take concession authorized by the Thai government and had the legal right to run the lottery in Thailand.

In the time of The King Rama III., Lottery tax cost 20,000 baht per year until the time of The King Rama IV. tax is up to 200,000 Baht per year and the highest of 3,849,600 Baht. in reign of The King Rama VI. in the year 2454 B.C. In the period of the King Rama V., the salary of an official would be 20-30 Baht. per month however, with this amount of the salary is abundant for their monthly expenditure and the rest may be also collected. ...
