Some of my views on different issues

What is bad about the electoral college

[edit]

The thing that is bad about the electoral college is the fact that it takes away from the fact that majority is supposed to rule. But with the electoral college it dosn't, because with the electoral votes the whole election can be change. http://www.panix.com/~levner/dvm/whats-wrong-with-the-electoral-college.html is a place that talks about this as well.

Minimum wage

[edit]

There are many dissadvantages to minimum wage. I had to write a essay so i thought id put it on here.

                                    My Persuasive Essay

Trying to prosper without hard work is trying to harvest before you have planted. The minimum wage should not be raised to $8.50 because it would hurt more than it helps. Businesses would most likely lay off workers due to the wage increase. The high school drop out rate would increase. Businesses, forced to raise prices, would lose customers. The poor that were already working there would also be hurt.

Minimum wage hurts businesses extraordinarily. The way it would hurt businesses is because the company would have to pay employees more and spend less for their supplies. That means they would either have to raise prices or buy fewer products to sell. If they raise prices, less people would buy their products. If they spend less on products to sell, they might run out and cause customers to become angry. The business might have to shut down.

Now that we see what the effect of raising the minimum wage is on businesses, we will now look at what the effect is on the kids in high school.

The people in high school are tremendously affected by a minimum wage increase. The webpage: www.fraserinstitute.ca/shared/readmore1.asp?sNav=ed&id=462 shows that the higher minimum wage is raised, the more people will drop out of high school. More people would drop out of high school believing they could earn a good living on just minimum wage. The reality is that they cannot. Minimum wage might be enough for them at first but when they start having to pay bills and taxes, they will be hard pressed for money. Instead of having a retirement plan set up so that they can live well when they are old, they find that all their money was used up in paying the bills. They would not be able to have a good house or car. They might even annoy people because of asking for money all of the time. They would not have a lot of friends. Even if they wanted to go back and continue high school, it would be hard because of the long hours they would have to work for minimum wage.

Now we will look at the effect it has on people that are hardly ever thought about: the poor.

It may seem at first that increasing minimum wages actually help the poor, it doesn’t. When the minimum wage is raised, businesses are likely to lay off some workers to save money. Now as a result people are out of work, not working, and not getting money. So we’ve actually increased the amount of poor people instead of decreasing the amount of poor people.

Even though I have made my topic clear and there should be no doubt in your mind whether we should raise minimum wage or not. There are some that would disagree with me.

One common argument against my topic is that maybe not all people in high school will drop out and that it might not even be minimum wage that causes it. Maybe not all people will drop out, but I say just one is too many. Why take the chance? Minimum wage has a big effect on the people in high school. It’s a shame that something that was meant to help them could actually hurt them.

Now you should be able to see why minimum wage should not be raised to $8.50. It has many negative effects on the economy. If there are any positive things, they are short-term gains but long-term losses. You might make more money at first but when businesses start to fall, what are you going to do? You must realize that there is no good reason to make minimum wage higher than what it already is.

And that's the end of my essay.

If you want you can tell me what you think in my questbook section.

Tell me what you think of my website here.

So what grade level is this for, if you don't mind me asking? It's a pretty interesting essay and some valid points. One thing I noted though was that you say there are no benefits from the minimum wage. But this isn't true. :-) Obviously persuasive essays should use powerful language and points to convince other people, but I think one thing every persuasive essay needs is counter-arguments to your own arguments. If you can demonstrate that there other sides with other ideas and if you can discuss those (refute, agree, or compromise), I find this to be a very persuasive thing to do because it demonstrates thoroughness and candor. Just my thoughts. :-) Cheers. ~ UBeR 18:06, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
