The Diamond Bar, formerly know as Long's Pub, is a historical site in Béal na Bláth in the country side County Cork. The assassination of the Irish leader Michael Collins was planed in Murray's farmhouse behind the Diamond Bar. The Michael Collins Memorial, where Michael Collins was shoot is located 1 mile from the Diamond Bar.
History
[edit]Michael Collins was on his way from Macroom to Bandon on the 22nd of August in 1922 with a convoy consisting of a Crossley tender, eight rifled man, one motorcyclist, an amoured car and the car with Michael Collins inside. [1] A secret brigade meeting of the Republican had been sheduled on that same day in Murray's farm house[2], behind the Diamond Bar, which is located on the road to Bandon and many prominent Republicans were in the pub on that day. [3]
A cab driver was hired by the convey to show them the way to Bandon because the road to Bandon was blocked by destroyed bridges and potted roads. However sight to the cab was temporarirly lost and the scout leader was unsure about about the way when the convey arrived at the five crossroads in Béal na Bláth, Denny Long, also known as Denny the Dane, was asked by the cab driver for the way to Bandon.[4]
Denny Long recognised Michael Collins and informed Tom Hales (Irish republican) about the presence of Michael Collins in the convey. Hales decided then to plan an ambush when Michael Collins would return from his journey to Bandon. Despite the fact that Éamon de Valera went to the Long's Pub and tried to prevent the ambush[5] , planings were carried out which let to the death of Michael Collins.[6]
Nowadays
[edit]Nowadays the Diamond Bar still remains open and is regulary visited by official politicians and celebrities. The owner organises traditional Irish road bowling competitions and offers tours explaining the ambush of Michael Collins. [7]
