Freedom's Orator is a biography of Mario Savio written by Robert Cohen.

Reception[edit]

Reception of Freedom's Orator has been generally positive among scholars. Aaron Modica of Education Review described it as a "well-crafted biography and wonderful contribution to scholarship on the Free Speech Movement at U.C. Berkeley",[1] Christopher Powell of Kwantlen Polytechnic University called it "an essential book for historians of America in the 1960s and beyond."[2] However, SFGate was more critical of the book: "'Freedom's Orator' tries hard to inspire, but the material doesn't always lend itself to that approach, especially when Savio observes that, after the victory of the Free Speech Movement, he 'had free speech, but nothing left to say.'"[3]
