This page in a nutshell: Writing an advertisement about your own carpet cleaning service is not of much educational value. |
If you run a business, it may be tempting to create an article praising your own carpet cleaning service. However, it does not provide much educational value.
Why
[edit]Notability
[edit]- If the organization in question is not notable enough (i.e. there are no reliable sources relevant to the article, due to the fact that only a few people know about it), there will not be sources to draw information from, nor will there be more than 5 people who want to research about it.
Bias
[edit]- If the article is biased or written like an advertisement, then it is not encyclopedic and also not educational. We do not want to know that you "provide high-tech services combined with the quantum-magnetic resonant features of the electron field to remove dirt from your carpet". If only praise like that is included in the article, then necessary information, such as what the organization is, what it does, its history, critical reception, whether peer-reviewed, double-blind studies conducted by actual scientists agree with the organization's claims are likely omitted or buried under paragraphs and paragraphs of advertisements.
Questions
[edit]Do non-profit organizations for good causes have to have non-biased articles with notability taken into consideration? I run a non-profit pony shelter!
[edit]- Just because your pony shelter is for a good cause, doesn't mean that everyone will agree. All opinions should be included according to their prominence. If 1000 people call your pony shelter an "immoral euthanizing machine", then it has to be included. Likewise, if the majority of people in your town agree with the pony shelter, their opinions will be counted, too. People's opinions are not to be presented as fact. Your pony shelter has been "praised as being 'a moral way to help animals'", but it is only an opinion that your pony shelter is a moral way to help animals, not a fact.
Wikipedia is censoring me and everyone has a evil conspiracy against me!
[edit]- Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so articles have to be written like an encyclopedia. Non-notable articles are not useful to readers and difficult to write, as no reliable sources exist. Articles have to be neutral, as an advertisement will often omit important information. (e.g. what the organization is, people's opinions about it; what peer-reviewed studies say about it) The inherent bias in advertisements also allows for misinformation. Striving for good-quality articles is not censorship, nor a evil conspiracy to take over the world.
