Half The Sky Live is a film inspired by the book Half The Sky by Pulitzer-prize winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. Half the Sky LIVE premieres on International Women’s Day March 4, 2010 with musical performances, celebrity commentary, and includes the world premiere of Woineshet, a powerful short film co-directed by Academy Award® Winner Marisa Tomei. The short film references one of the many stories from Half the Sky and chronicles the struggles of a poor Ethiopian woman who ultimately triumphs over sexual violence and discrimination.
Broadcasted from New York City to theaters across the country, Half the Sky LIVE is a one-night-only, interactive event – featuring appearances by Kristof and WuDunn, Marisa Tomei, Michael Franti, and Dr. Helene Gayle in a joint effort to support the growing movement to empower women and girls in the fight against global poverty and oppression.
The book Half the Sky has been featured on Oprah, CNN, and Dateline NBC, and remains a New York Times bestseller. Tom Brokaw says, “Half the Sky…will pierce your heart and arouse your conscience.”
