Robert "LB" Dorsey[edit]
Robert Dorsey, is a multi grammy nominated American recording engineer and music producer professionally known as "LB." He has worked with Method Man, The Roots, Beyonce, and the Mark Rapp Jazz Trio among others.
Life and Career[edit]
Early Career[edit]
Robert began his career as a youth at his local church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania studying piano, percussion, and voice. After developing his skills he began attending Howard University where he was a DJ and music producer for a rap group in the Washington D.C area. During this time his friend Nicole Culmer, who started working with the newly formed "Bad Boy Records," introduced him to record producer Chucky Thompson. Shortly after the introduction the two became friends and LB began working as part of Chucky's record label "Chuck Life Records." During this time he learned how to produce records from Chucky and his protege Rich Harrison. One day Chucky invited him to a mixing session at "Cue Studios" in Virginia where he introduced him to recording and mixing engineer Tony Maserati.
After his time at "Chuck Life Records" LB began an internship with Tony Maserati in New York City. In this role he discovered a love for audio engineering and began learning the nuances of audio tracking. While working with Tony he received an opportunity to intern at Quad Recording Studios which helped to hone his audio engineering skills. This opportunity allowed him to engineer and develop relationships with countless artist.
Music Production[edit]
One night LB was cleaning a room for a studio session at Quad Studios when recording artist Method Man overheard his music playing on the main console speakers. Method Man liked what he heard and would then offer to buy the tracks he produced. This lead to him working on music for Method Man's album "Tical 2000: Judgement Day" on the track entitled "Cradle Rock" featuring Left Eye and Booster[1]. During this time Method Man would go out of his way to help him place tracks with other Wu-Tang Clan members and various artist in the music business. Later while working on production for Falona Brown, he would be introduced to his home town rap group "The Roots"[2]. This opportunity was a catalyst to him producing and engineering on The Roots various projects and albums throughout the years. LB also became a producer for local artist The UN, Epic Saga, Black Taxi, Kara Ali, and many more.
Audio Engineer[edit]
He was sought out as an in house engineer to work with "Music World" on Solange's "Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams"[3] studio album as well as Beyonce's grammy award winning album "B Day." Where he engineered on various songs and remixes[4]. Throughout the years he continued working with other recording artists and producers such as Andrea Martin, Chrisette Michelle, Bink, and Kelly Rowland. He also worked with Sony's MBK Entertainment and Jeff Robinson where he would work with recording artist H.E.R., Fame, Elle Varner, and K. Michelle among others [5].
Philanthropy[edit]
LB serves as a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (Grammys) and was a member of the Producer & Engineer committee.[6][7] He also teaches production and engineering through internships and for ASL. He also participates in events with Litsounds where he lends his time and expertise to help other music producers and engineers achieve their goals.
