Mussulo Island (Angola)

Reference to: Angola

Mussulo is an Island off the coast of Angola, Africa. It is most populated in December and January. This is so due to all of the Christmas and New Year activity. This is also the time when Angola's temperature is highest. However, Winter is the best time of year for surfing in Mussulo [1]. Most people own or rent beach houses for their stay in the island. There are also hotels that one can stay in. Most people stay in Mussulo for about a week to enjoy the sun, the beach, and no traffic.

Location[edit]

Luanda[edit]

Luanda is the capital and largest city of Angola, located on Angola's coast with the Atlantic Ocean.[2] Luanda is Angola's chief seaport and administrative center with a population of at least 5 million.[2]

Country History[edit]

Portugal has been present in Angola for 400 years, occupied the territory in the 19th and early 20th century, and ruled over it for about 50 years. [3] As a consequence, both countries share cultural aspects: language (Portuguese) and main religion (Roman Catholic Christianity).[3] However, the Angolan culture is mostly native Bantu which was mixed with Portuguese culture. [3] The diverse ethnic communities with their own cultural traits, traditions and native languages include the Ovimbundu, Ambundu, Bakongo, Chokwe, and other peoples.[3]

Housing[edit]

"You can visit for a day or stay over. Each time we visited we stayed over in little chalets, which are in a lovely setting with little walkways leading to each one through garden areas. The beach has sunbeds and a bar and snacks and ice-creams with waiter service. There is a restaurant set back from the beach which we had breakfast at but is also open throughout the day, serving lovely food in a buffet style. Once everyone leaves the beach on Saturday they clear the sunbeds away and set out dining tables and a BBQ, it is very romantic and much different to the hustle and bustle of Luanda" [4]

Transportation[edit]

Sea[edit]

One "can get a boat there from the city, they go backwards and forwards all day long" [4]

Road[edit]

One may also drive to the Island on a recently constructed road. However, this direction takes much longer though it is the best way to transport a vehicle to the island.

Entertainment[edit]

Beach[edit]

The Beach in Mussulo is the main attraction, friends and family get together and spend most of the time either in the water or enjoying the sun.

Surfing[edit]

Mussulo in Luanda is a fairly exposed point break that has reasonably consistent surf. Works best in offshore winds from the east northeast. Tends to receive a mix of groundswells and windswells and the ideal swell angle is from the southwest. Also, Mussulo is rarely crowded. However, it is very important to beware of rips and sharks.[1]
