Overview

Rangers played a total of 47 competitive matches during the 2017-18 season.


  • 22 May - John Gilligan resigned from the PLC board.[4]
  • 31 May - Bruno Alves became Pedro Caixinha's first signing as Rangers manager, joining on a two-year contract from Cagliari.[6]
  • 14 June - Rangers agreed an enhanced sponsorship deal with 32Red until 2019.[13]
  • 15 June - First friendly of new season
  • 17 june - Mccroire out on loan
  • 19 June - europa league draw [2]
  • 19 June - Morelos JOINS
  • 20 June - Rangers appointed Manchester City's academy director Mark Allen as the club's Director of football.[15]
  • 21 June - Rangers announced a new commercial deal with Sports Direct, which replaced the arrangement they had in place.[16]
    • On the same day - The club revealed it will keep the 2016-17 home kit for the new season and release new away and third kits.[17]

    • On the same day - Charles Green lost his appeal over the ruling that excused the club from paying his legal fees for a possible criminal trial regarding alleged fraudulent acquisition of Rangers' assets in 2012.[18][19][20][21]
    • On the same day - Scottish Premiership fixtures for the 2017-18 were released with Rangers opening fixture scheduled for 5 August at Fir Park against Motherwell. [5]
  • 28 June - Andy Halliday leaves on loan. [6]
  • 29 June - Rangers win the first match of the season against Progres Nierdcorn [7]
  • 4 July - Rangers are knocked out of Europe [8]
  • 5 July - HMRC wins the big tax case against the creditors of Oldco [9]

  • 18 July - Rangers are fined £6,250 by UEFA [11]

  • 26 July - SPFL board confirmed that no further sanctions would be taken against Rangers [13]
  • 29 July - Michael O'Halloran joined former club St Johnstone on loan until January[24]


  • 7 September - The Scottish Football Association announced it would not participate in any independent review into the game's response to Rangers' use of Employee Benefit Trusts.[14]
  • 12 September - Rangers announced their particaption in the Eusébio Cup against Benfica in October 2018. [15]
  • 21 September - The Scottish Professional Football League conceded that it was unable to conduct a review into the game's response to Rangers' use of Employee Benefit Trusts due to the lack of the SFA's involvement. [16]
  • 25 September - Rangers SPFL match with Aberdeen, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 21, is moved as the semi-final with Motherwell taking place at Hampden on Sunday, October 22. New date Wednesday, November 29 . [17]
  • 28 September - Rangers announced their participation in the Florida Cup in January 2018. [18]
  • 29 September - Media reported Rangers forward Kenny Miller was dropped from the first team squad after a fall-out with manager Caixinha. [19]
  • 11 October - Miller returns [22]
  • 12 October - Dave King argues in court against the Takeover Panels ruling, admitting he did not have the funds to follow the ruling [23]
  • 22 October - Rangers lose to Motherwell 2-0 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park. Caixinha is sent to the stands while Carodos suffers a facial injury.
  • 23 October - A press conference by Pedro Caixinha is not broadcast with reports he had criticised several first-team players. Caixinha is also banned for
  • 30 October - Director of Football Mark Allen unveiled the new scouting department appointments. Andy Scoulding became Head of Scouting, John Brown returned to the club as UK scout, Dave Swanick took on the European scouting brief and Billy McLaren moved up from the Academy scouting to assist.   • 2 November - Ryan Jack had his red card against Kilmarnock overturned after a Scottish FA hearing. [28]
  • 3 November - Rangers International Football Club plc published its Annual Report for the year ending 30 June 2017. Turnover increased to £29.2m with operating expenses totalling £32.9m. [29] [30]
  • 1 December - Rangers shareholders passed a special resolution that will allow the board to convert loans debt for shares.[31]
  • 7 December - RANGERS have been given the go-ahead to build a new training complex for their youth players. [32]
  • 7 December - Rangers failed pursuit of Derek McInnes.[33]
  • 22 December - Rangers appoint Graeme Murty as manager until the end of the season.[2]
  • 22 December - Dave King was ordered to follow the instruction set by the Takeover Panel to make an £11m offer for the remaining shares in Rangers International Football Club Plc.[28]
  • 29 December - Ross and Robby McCrorie sign new four and a half year contracts until 2022.[29][30]
  • 3 January - Rangers appoint former defender and reserve coach Jimmy Nicholl as assistant manager to Graeme Murty.
  • 9 January - Rangers appointed three coaches to its Academy, two of which were former players. Midfielder Kevin Thomson and French defender Gregory Vignal returned to coach in the Intermediate section with the under-13’s and under-15’s. Ex-Airdrie midfielder Stuart Taylor joined the Development Squad coaching team. [34]
  • 8 February - Rangers International Football Club Plc agree a £3 million credit facility with merchant bank Close Brothers[31]
