My name is Mike McGee, A.K.A. Mighty Mike McGee. I am a poet based in San Jose, CA. My external website is MikeMcGee.net.

Modus operandi

[edit]

(11/01/2006) I must say that having one of my articles (namely Mighty Mike McGee) involved in a potential vote of deletion, due to the fact that it is an autobiographical account, has taught me a great deal of what stays and goes in WP. I am grateful that nobody has quite bitten my head off about it, and have discovered that I should certainly never touch that page again. Vanity is never good, even here on the WP. I will say that remaining unbiased when writing about myself isn't as easy as I thought.

I am curious, however, as to the validity of any other articles I have written or may want to write, considering my proximity to the information I would apply. Changes to the article by others are fascinating, and I will say that if the article remains, I am eager to see what comes of it.

This has been a valuable lesson.

(3/5/2006) I discovered the Wikipedia when a friend said, "Hey, I saw your name on it." I thought, "Neat!" then I checked and realized either I was going to wait to see what info people would submit about me, or I'd do it myself. Why not? I know me better than most people do. The red link mad me sad. I know it must be a sign of vanity to write my own article, but I honestly sort of assumed most "artists" did, then the public simply corrected the errors...

Being that I am only slightly notable in a very tiny sub-category of an artform, I wasn't to fearful of encroaching on someone else's opportunity to divulge all they knew about me, but dammit, I've been performing long time and it is what I do more than anything else.

In the process of adding my own article, I realized that I could really help out throughout the very varied poetry and performance poetry related articles – currently existing and not existing here on Wikipedia. I believe I may be able to broaden the available scope of Wikipedia's Slam Poetry, Slam Poets, Performance Poetry and other related subjects, as I am involved with them daily on a personal and rather unique level, and happen to be very interested in them altogether.

I'm down to get into other places on the Wiki too. Learn as much as possible about it and be good at it all around.

I promise I won't even touch something I know nothing about.

I am so glad I can go back and edit. Of the characteristics I like about Wikipedia, one is the ability to edit and evolve pages, and the other is the NPOV aspect - not sounding like me in the article – leaving that to the subject. One of the problems I've run into is the closeness I have to the subjects I'm writing about. I know almost too much, or at least, I want to divulge everything, but am limited to information that is verifiable and/or notable, and rightly so.

I guess I'll get better as this thing does.

Lessons learned through Wiki

Talk:Chapbooks Learned a good one when I wrote up an article on chapbooks without searching for a pre-existing one. You can find the superior article (not by me) under Chapbook.
