Netbible is a template to allow citation of the NET Bible. A link is created that goes directly to the passage on the NET Bible's site, and upon mouse-over a tooltip is provided to the user informing them of what is being linked to. By default, if no verse is specified, John 3:16 is used. The title of the generated link (and the tooltip) may be changed to suit the editor's needs.

Features[edit]

  • Verse ranges and multiple verses - With this template, you can do multiple verses and verse ranges. Make sure you separate the ranges by semi-colon; e.g. John 3:16; 18-20.
  • Book Abbreviations - The NET gateway uses the first 3 letters of the book for an abbreviations and it will likely correct other abbreviations (e.g. mt for Matthew) - just realize that if you put an abbreviation in the passage, that will also show up in the link's title on Wikipedia by default (see examples below)
  • Tabs - The NET gateway has a number of tabs with different information the user can cycle between. It is possible to use this template to set which tab to link to, e.g. the King James Version tab or the Greek-Hebrew tab. Right now, you have to use the specific tab titles given below, no other titles or abbreviations will work for this feature. This does not work with print or text mode.
  • Print or Text Mode - It is possible to use a print- or a text-only format that removes the rest of the interface. This does not work with tabs. See below.

Usage[edit]

{{User:Joren/Netbible|passage|whatever you want the link title to say|tab|mode}}

or you can use named parameters, if you'd rather not worry about the order:

{{User:Joren/Netbible|passage=passage | title=whatever you want the link title to say | tab=tab | mode=mode}}

This will create a link to the NET Bible's website, which displays a copy of that translation at the specified passages. Additionally, if the user hovers the cursor above the link, a tooltip will be generated with the link title with either "(NET Translation)" or (if one of the tabs is used) "(bible.org)" appended.

  • passage - Accepts any formatting that net.bible.org accepts; e.g. Book Chapter:Verse or John 3:16. It is safe to use numerical prefixes (e.g. 1 John, 2 John). However, Roman numerals are not supported. You can do multiple citations using this parameter, as long as books are separated by semi-colons; e.g. "Exodus 20:2-17; Dt 5:6-21; Ex 34:11-27" will work. You can also abbreviate multiple citations from the same book or chapter, as long as verses within a chapter are separated by a comma (not a semi-colon). E.g. "John 3:5-6, 16-18" or "Romans 3:23, 10-18; 6:23; 5:8; 10:9, 13" will also work. If (for some very interesting reason) no verse is specified, John 3:16 is used.
  • title: This will change the text of the link to whatever you want. Also changes the tooltip (except for the translation title)
  • tab: Changes the tab displayed in the NET Bible interface. You cannot use the tab and mode parameters together! You can choose between the following tabs:
    • kjv - Uses the King James version instead of the NET.
    • grkheb - Uses the Hebrew or Greek source text instead of the NET
    • xref - Displays cross-references for each verse in the passage (but not displaying the text of the verse itself)
    • arts - Displays art throughout history inspired by any of the verses in the passage (but not displaying the text of the verse itself)
    • hymns - Displays a list of (MIDI-playable) hymns throughout history inspired by any of the verses in the passage (but not displaying the text of the verse itself)
  • mode: Changes the format. The default is to display the whole interface. "print" displays the text and footnotes without all the frame-y stuff. "text" displays the text, only the text, and nothing but the text. You cannot use the tab and mode parameters together!
