Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomuscology

Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomusicology is annual international award bestowed by Fuimio Koizumi Trust, residing in Tokyo, Japan.

History[edit]

Fumio Koizumi Trust was established on October 11, 1989 by Mieko Koizumi, widow of Professor Fumio Koizumi (1927-83), a distinguished Japanese ethnomusicologist. The prize is given to individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the field of study of traditional music. Recipient receives an award certificate in addition to the prize money. Recipient must deliver a lecture at the ceremony, held during the late spring in Tokyo.

Fumio Koizumi Prize for Ethnomusicology is widely regarded as the most prestigious award in the field of study of traditional music. Since the establishment of the prize, 25 individuals and 2 groups were awarded this prize. Among the recipients of Fumio Koizumi Prize are John Blacking (UK), Bruno Nettl (USA), William P. Malm (USA), Steven Feld USA), José Maceda (Philippines), Jean-Jacques Nattiez (Canada), Tanimoto Kazuyuki (Japan), Krister Malm (Sweden), Simha Arom (France).
