(Conrad Stibbe) (Conrad Michael Stibbe was a Classical Archaeologist. He was born on 7th September 1925 in The Hague and died on 7th May 2019 in Amsterdam.

Family[edit]
Conrad Stibbe was born to Max Stibbe and Paula Hoorweg. He had a brother, Arthur. He first lived in Amsterdam, where he attended the Free School of The Hage, which had been founded by his father. When he was ten, Conrad and Arthur moved with their mother to Ascona, in southern Switzerland, after her divorce.
At some point, Paula, Conrad, and Max returned to Amsterdam. His mother started a relationship with the wealthy industrialist Dirk de Jong. During the war, Conrad lived in Amsterdam.

Conrad married Anneke Twiest in 1964. Stibbe had met Anneke in Rome, while she worked on her doctoral thesis. Their two sons are Dirk and Michael. Anneke died in 1984.
In 1985, Stibbe remarried to Barbara Heldring, and they had three children, Leander, Hilde and Timo.

Career[edit]
Involved with the founding of the magazine Castrum Peregrini, for which he wrote under the pen name 'Corrado M. Hoorweg'.
Worked with a group of friends to translate George's Der Stern des Bundes (1914) a 18-part poetry cycle.
1955-60, teacher at the Quaker School in Ommen
1956 - participated in excavation on Crete with BAstet
set up the series "Phoenix Classical Pockets' at publisher De Haan in Zeist with Prof. Stefan Rat. Stibbe's father had published with De Haan, and the director Johannes Emanuel (Gabriël) Zeylmans van Emmichoven was a Castrum Peregrini friend of Stibbe's.

1971(-1986?), succeeded Willem Peters as Head of Antiquities Department, and vice-director of the Netherlands Institute in Rome
1972 - PhD based on work on Laconian pottery (?) --- promoviert.... going to have to brush up on Dutch academic terms and systems...
1974 - unsuccessfully applied to Groningen professorship (Marianne Masskant-Kleibrink got it)
Stibbe's work at Satiricum... need to better understand when this began and how (cf. involvement of Pallottino)
1990- retirement.
