Julie Leven (born July 21, 1960) is an American violinist performing extensively on both modern and period violin. Julie is the Founder and Artistic Director of Shelter Music Boston a social service organization which annually delivers 70 chamber music concerts of the highest artistic standards to homeless shelters in Greater Boston. Repertoire ranges from the 16th to 21st centuries and projects include improvisational composition workshops teaching homeless audience members to participate in the creation of new works of music. For dedication to providing marginalized populations with live classical chamber music concerts of the highest quality, Julie was selected by the Social Innovation Forum to be a 2013 Innovator. In 2014 she was the first ever classical musician to be named a Boston Neighborhood Fellow; an accolade delivered to a member of the community who quietly, with vision, creativity, and dedication, makes changes which bring respect to community members in need.
