In January 1917 Britain intercepted a message from the German Foreign Minister, Arthur Zimmerman, to the German Minister in Mexico. The telegraph offered United States land to Mexico if Germany won the war. This telegraph helped encourage America to join the war. Many historians state that no other message has had such serious consequences. ^[1] The telegraph was given to United States President Woodrow Wilson on February 14, 1917. He announced the news to the American Public on March 1, 1917. On April 6, 1917 America declared war on Germany and all of its allies. The Zimmerman Telegraph was the final straw for the United States. Every action has consequences and the story of the Zimmermann Telegraph teaches us that. ^[2]
