Thereza Story-Maskelyne nee Llewelyn (1834-1926) was an active photographer and botanist.

Early Life

[edit]

Thereza was the eldest of John Dillwyn Llewelyn's six children. Her father was the first photographer in Wales. Thereza shared her father's interest in photography and helped him with his scientific experiments. In her childhood Thereza conducted botanic experiments and received help from George Bentham. Additionally, Thereza helped her father maintain meteorological records.[1][2]

Later Life

[edit]

Thereza married English geologist and politician Nevil Story-Maskelyne in June 1858 and the couple enjoyed a very happy relationship.[2][3]

Scientific Engagement and Correspondence with Charles Darwin

[edit]

Maskelyne's husband encouraged her scientific endeavours. In December 1871 he wrote Sir John Lubbock, 3rd Baronet to ask if Charles Darwin would kindly send Thereza copies of his texts. Darwin obliged this request and Nevil Maskelyne sent him a thank you note on his wife's behalf.[4] Darwin was aware of the scientific observations Thereza made of her canary and siskin attacking flowers, and he cited her observations in an 1874 Nature (journal) article.[5]
