The Iowa Hawkeyes women's volleyball team was founded in 1977.

Coaching history[edit]

Georgeanne Green era[edit]

Georgeanne Green coached the first Hawkeyes team in 1977. She coached for three seasons.[1]

Mary Phyl Dwight era[edit]

Mary Dwight was the second coach for the Hawkeyes. She coached the team for two years.[1] She is a former Olympic handball player and head coach of Kansas State's volleyball team.[2][3]

Sandy Stewart era[edit]

Sandy Stewart coached from 1982-88.[1] Iowa was the only university to interview her for a coaching position. She started off slow, finishing in 1982 with a record of 9-22. The next year, her team finished second in the Big Ten Conference, which was the highest ever finish for the Hawkeyes. She won the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1983 for her efforts.[4]

She resigned in 1989, citing a need for a career change.[5]

Ruth Nelson era[edit]

Ruth Nelson, a former assistant coach for the Olympic team, coached the Hawkeyes for two years.[1] She was selected to be the coach in 1989.[6]

This was the last head coaching job for Nelson, and she finished with an overall record of 41-26 for Iowa.

Linda Schoenstedt era[edit]

Linda Schoenstedt coached Iowa from 1991-97. She was the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1994, joining Sandy Stewart as the only Iowa volleyball coaches to receive the award.[1]

Rita Buck-Crockett era[edit]

Rita-Buck Crockett coached the Hawkeyes from 1998 to 2003.[1]

Cindy Fredrick era[edit]

Cindy Fredrick was the head coach of the Hawkeyes from 2004-08.[1]

Sharon Dingman era[edit]

Sharon Dingman was the Hawkeyes volleyball coach from 2008-13.[1]

Bond Shymansky era[edit]

Bond Shymansky is the current head volleyball coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes.[1]
