The Faithful Friend, written by Robert D. San Souci and illustrated by Brian Pinkney, is a 1995 picture book published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. The Faithful Friend was a Caldecott Medal Honor book for 1996 and the winner of the California Book Award Silver Medal for Juvenile in 1995.
A story about two best friends, Clement and Hippolyte, who go on an adventure together to help Clement propose to Pauline, the love of his life. When Pauline accepts Clement’s proposal, all seems to be well until her uncle, the evil wizard Monsieur Zabocat, refuses to allow the two of them to be married. While the three are journeying home, Monsieur Zabocat decides to place a curse on the couple in love and lure Hippolyte into a deadly trap that leaves him with a difficult choice: to save his own life or to save the life of his best friend, Clement. Hippolyte, however, uses his brains and brave heroics in order to uncover the plot, and he chooses to risk his own life in order to save the lives of Clement and Pauline. Hippolyte prevails in his attempts and not only saves the lives of his two friends, but good truly prevails over evil as he leaves Uncle Zabocat to suffocate at the hands of his own curse.
