The Cranworth Law Society is a collegiate, representative society of law students at Downing College, Cambridge. Although it was founded as the law society of Downing College, it is today open to membership of non-law students and members of other colleges. Founded in 1921 with a membership of 26 students and faculties,[1] it is today the largest collegiate law society at the University of Cambridge.[2] It is named after Robert Rolfe, 1st Baron Cranworth, who served twice as Lord Chancellor and was an elected Fellow of Downing College.

History and founding[edit]

At its first meeting, the members were welcomed by Harold Hazeltine. At the second meeting, the Emeritus Downing Professor of the Laws of England Courtney Kenny gave a speech in honour of Lord Cranworth.

Robert Yewdall Jennings was president of the society in his third year of university, and later honorary president of the society.[3][4]
