Kookana or Kukana (depending on the choice of alphabets made for translation of the Hindi word) is name of a Jat clan or a Gotra name of Jats in Rajasthan and boardering parts of Haryana. The origin of Kookanas is believed to be from Jodhpur/Nagaur area. They are believed to be the descendents of Shri Kookan/Kukanji. A batch of Kookana family migrated probably some 500 years ago and settled near Bikaner. This with time developed into a couple of large villages (with current population about 20,000) near Bikaner, namely Norangdeshar (approximately 20 Km from Bikaner on Jaipur Highway) and Bamlu (abbout 5 km off the highway). A small group moved on to Punjab around 1800 AD and settled in Hissar District, in the province of 'Paintalisa' (45 villages) dominated by Beniwal clan (another Jat Gotra). The latest migration of Kookanas include a move to Australia by a family in 1985, where currently four Kookana families reside.
