Cosmic Crisp

WA 38 (brandname Cosmic Crisp) is an American apple variety. The breeding was started in 1997 at Washington State University Tree Fruit Research and Extension Center in Wenatchee. Cosmic Crisp is an intersection of Honey Crisp and Enterprise.

In the breeding of the variety, the focus was not on the appearance, but on durability and long shelf life. Cosmic Crisp is characterized mainly by uniform coloration, firm flesh and an improved shelf life.[1]

For 2017, there are 700,000 pre-orders, which are allocated only to Washington farmers in a draft system. The variety ripens at the same time as Red Delicious and is expected to replace a large part of the Red Delicious stocks.

Cosmic Crisp will be available to consumers in 2019.[2]
