Hannah Kirby (born August 8th, 1989) is an American photographer and multimedia artist, best known for her attempts to pick up her shadow.

Golden Years

[edit]

Hannah Kirby (born Hannah Louise Tamor Kirby) was birthed and raised in Santa Monica, California to proud parents Sarah Tamor and Peter Kirby, sister of Rachel Kirby. Her parents became divorced two years later. Kirby has been known to have a large collection of different sized bags and boxes, which some believe has it's roots in the experience of switching to and from each parent's house every two weeks for 15 years. In 1993, Peter remarried to Rosanna Albertini, then Sarah moved in with partner Alex Ward in 2001, creating a family with more parents than children. Kirby would go on to write short stories with her Italian mother-friend Rosanna Albertini, such as "The story of Fing-ball and Simck-Bing-Good on Lilack (300 Galaxies away!)". Meanwhile Alex Ward and Kirby made sculptures out of melted wax at the dinner table.

What happened to the Magic School Bus? years

2001-2005

Coming of age in the Democratic bubble of California during the Bush years heavily influenced the developmental years of a generation of teenagers, including Kirby. Kirby talks of a distrust of the government spawned from the Patriot Act, as well as feelings of fear and confusion surrounding the reality of being in a country at war. This suspicion of authority was pervasive in other aspects of her life as well, and Kirby constantly struggled with the need to live a seditious life without becoming self-destructive. This is also known as teenage angst.

2006-2008

[edit]

During the summer of 2006, Kirby was gifted her first manual film camera by photographer Judy Fiskin. Kirby was able to teach herself basic camera functions with the help of the internet and began to take pictures of her surroundings.

Kirby managed to graduate from high school in 2007.

College life was of little interest to Kirby. Instead, she spent almost two years working various jobs in order to survive. Unhappy with her bleak situation, Kirby returned to the idea of school and applied to the community college of her dreams. At Santa Monica College Kirby enrolled in many photography courses and began to develop as a photographer.

The Bay Area years

2009-2011

[edit]

It was only a matter of time before Kirby grew bored at Santa Monica College, as well as with her hometown. After a bad breakup, Kirby escaped L.A. to live in San Francisco.
