The stone inscription at Talangere village in Kasargod town, Kerala, southern India belongs to the Alupa rulers according to KV Ramaesh.[1] Jayasimha ruled Tulunad between CE 980 and CE 1010. [2]

Facts[edit]

The language of the inscription is mainly Kannada, though there are certain lines in Sanskrit also.[2] The first six lines have been inscribed in Grantha script and remaining 21 lines have been inscribed in Kannada script. Though the inscription does not have dates, scholars have dated it to be belonging to end of tenth century CE. The word 'mora' is used to indicate the place by name 'Mogral'. The inscription states that Mochabbe got the land as 'Kanyadana'. It also states that the Mochabbe converted the barren land she received as 'Kanyadana' into a fertile land. It states that only Jogamma's female progenies will have the ownership of the land and it will go into a male progeny's hands in case she does not beget a female progeny. The inscription does not mention how Mochabbe, Jayasimha and Jogamma are related. [2] According to P. Gururaja Bhat, this could be the first inscription mentioning maternal social system.[3]

It contains the ancient Kannada words like 'ovalu nela', 'ovalu neera', 'kanyadaanam gotta mane', 'oluppu', 'uurme',etc. [4]
