My personal summary before entering the tidbits:

  • The essayist start by setting the financial value of the dojinshi in which boys love is a category.
  • Then he gives his short on how it started.
  • Afterward he makes the list of the commons points between yaoised series
  • He gives more perspective by using the testimony of someone who has been in thick of the yaoi boom
  • He explains the composition of the Shonen Jump's coktail and its proportion of yaoi
  • The limit of the coktail by analyzing Takeshi Obata works.
  • He explains the Japanese readership issue
  • He conclude on the perspective for the yaoi in the mainstream manga

Comment: His argumentation is yaoi <=> money <=> free ad <=> readership to which point ?

1 Can original works & fanzines coexist[edit]

The four distinct categories of dojinshi (p112-113):

  1. The parodies (comedy sens) & published works hijacking.
  2. The originals creations
  3. The eroticism & the hetero porn
  4. The yaoi

The numbers of 400K attendees for the 30K professionals & amateurs stands for the 3 day of Comiket. The demands & offers is such that the Comiket has to separate the days of the festival by theme to satisfy everyone.

Media Create made an inquiry on the otaku market. On 2007 it represented 1.14 billions Euros of gross revenue with the fellowing distribution (p112-113). source

  • DVD/CD (anime):208 millions (18.2%)
  • Divers publications: 248 millions (21.8%)
  • Games: 343 millions (30%)
  • Figurines & merchandising: 172 millions (15.1%)
  • Dojinshi: 169 millions (14.9%)

=> Even if the fanzine market is amateur, it represent a non-negligible commercial segment of the industry. It is not for nothing that it attracts a good number of professionals on both sides of the fence, some making more money in drawing & selling dojinshi in two week-ends than working one year for a publisher.

Personal comment: Use the elements for the Dojinshi article. At least some real numbers for both Comiket and Doujin market.

Memories (p113-115)[edit]

The first series to have a lots of yaoi dojinshi is Captain Tsubasa but the yaoi big explosion & awareness of it started with Saint Seiya anime adaptation. Masami Kurumada works being adapted by Shingo Araki was a planete wide success. Out of the five heroes Shun was the most yaoisable.

"A true walking caricature this characters was the most fragile & sensible, with fine traits, long hairs, doe eyes and the sole feminine armor in the lot (with a nice 95B in guise of breastplate in the anime version), where others fought under animal constellation. We remember thought with amusement first French episodes where Shun was dubbed by a woman."

The Andromeda saint was also the only one unable to fight bare hands and so to have a weapon. Which was a chain with a quadruple sympolic:

  • The notion of jewel (feminine symbol)
  • It could change length but could also be supple or rigid at will (phallic symbol)
  • it could be either defensive or offensive (both the sexual ambiguity and the notions of seme & uke)
  • the Andromeda's myth, who was tied on a rock and offered as sacrifice to calm a marine monster wrath. (the sexual aspect of the scene)

Shun had unconsciously all to be considered by tv watchers as a character apart, he became one of the favorites characters for the series fans.

During the manga publication and the anime broacasting. It success was never demented as much on teenagers boys who identified to the heroes than teenagers girls who either fall for the servant (and servile) saints charms or gave themselves to heart to make parodies of the series (yaoi or not). Authors likes CLAMP, Kazuma Kodaka or Arina Toshini started in the fanzines thanks to this title with 88 characters (representing the 88 constellations) in majority masculines allowed an incredible numbers of couples.
