The first movement starts with a tutti section in the orchestra in the tonic key. The solo trumpet later enters on an ascending arpeggiated tonic chord leading into the first theme, which echoes the earlier tutti. The piece later modulates into the key of C (E-major version), then back to the tonic key. The first melody trumpet melody is briefly recapitulated, leading to the conclusion.
The second movement begins in A minor (E-major version). It is written in cut time but has a 6/8 or 12/8 feel. The trumpet comes in on a dolorous tonic note that trills and leads to the first melody.
