Family Strigidae - Owls [1]
Generic sequence of Strigidae is based on the molecular phylogenetic analysis of Salter et al. (2019). This analysis also reveals that Strigidae is
composed of two major clades that have been treated as subfamilies: Surniinae and Striginae, respectively. Species sequence is based primarily on the
NACC and SACC for genera limited to the western hemisphere and Dickinson & Remsen (2013) for the others.
Strigidae genera: 23
Strigidae species: 234
Strigidae subspecies: 425
Strigidae Breeding Range: Worldwide, IO, PO, SA, MA, AF, PAL, NA, OR, AU [2]

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Uroglaux Mayr, 1937 | 1 | AU | Mayr | 1937 | 1 | Uroglaux is a basal taxon within Strigidae. Higher-quality DNA needed to definitively establish whether Uroglaux dimorpha is sister to all remaining typical owl lineages or whether it is nested within the Ninox + Sceloglaux clade (Salter et al. 2020). |

Margarobyas Olson & Suárez, 2008 | 1 | NA | Olso | 2008 | 3 | New genus name required for Gymnoglaux, which is a junior synonym of Gymnasio, which is referable to Megascops nudipes (AOU 54th supplement). Phylogenetic analyses show that Margarobyas lawrencii is a member of Surniinae and is not closely related to Megascops nudipes as traditionally treated. Exact placement within Surniinae unsettled due to suboptimal specimens available to Salter et al. (2019). |
Taenioptynx Kaup, 1848 | 2 | OR | Kaup | 1848 | 4 | Phylogenetic analysis reveals that Glaucidium brodiei (and presumably G. sylvaticum) are not closely related to other Glaucidium species but rather form a discrete clade with Micrathene and Xenoglaux that is sister to the remaining species within Surniinae. The genus Taenioptynx Kaup, 1848 is resurrected for these two species (Salter et al. 2020). |
Micrathene Coues, 1866 | 1 | NA MA | Coue | 1866 | 5 | Micrathene, Xenoglaux and Glaucidium brodiei/sylvaticum form a discrete clade that is sister to the remaining species within Surniinae (Salter et al. 2020). |
Xenoglaux O'Neill & Graves, GR, 1977 | 1 | SA | Neil | 1977 | 6 | Micrathene, Xenoglaux and Glaucidium brodiei/sylvaticum form a discrete clade that is sister to the remaining species within Surniinae (Salter et al. 2020). |

Jubula Bates, GL, 1929 | 1 | AF | Bate | 1929 | 14 | The taxonomic position of Jubula is unsettled. It may be basal to the entire Striginae subfamily or it is a basal taxon within the tribe Bubonini (Salter et al. 2020). |
Bubo Duméril, 1805 | 10 | OR NA AF PAL MA SA | Dumé | 1805 | 15 | |
Ketupa Lesson, RP, 1830 | 12 | OR AF PAL | Less | 1830 | 16 | Ketupa is embedded within Bubo, which may be better treated as two or three genera (Wink 2016; Salter et al. 2020; Wink & Sauer-Gürth 2021). Ketupa is retained as a separate genus and expanded to include nine species formerly attributed to traditional Bubo to align with WGAC and Clements (2022). Note change in gender. |
Scotopelia Bonaparte, 1850 | 3 | AF | Bona | 1850 | 17 | Scotopelia forms a sister clade with Ketupa; both are embedded in traditional Bubo (Wink 2016; Salter et al. 2020; Wink & Sauer-Gürth 2021). Maintained as a separate genus aligning with WGAC and Clements (2022). |
