Nezha (Chinese: 哪吒之魔童降世[1],pinyin:Nezhazhimotongjiangshi) is a 3D animated film released in the Chinese mainland in 2019. It is produced by Horgos Color TiaoWu Film Co., LTD[2] and directed by Yang Yu, credited as Jiaozi[3][4]. The film is based on a traditional Chinese mythological story about Nezha is worshipped by Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. According to the Nanu Sutra, this Sacred body is a giant god with 1,000 arms wearing the skin of a tiger, holding the sun and moon and various sacred instruments, and garon as a belt. Normally, it looks like a child with two arms[5]. The story of Ne Zha Conquers the Dragon King comes from the novel " Investiture of the Gods ”written by Xu Zhonglin in the Ming Dynasty.

Nezha was released in China exclusively in IMAX and China Film Giant Screen theaters on 13 July 2019, followed by other theaters on 26 July, distributed by Beijing Enlight Pictures[6]. It earned 50.36 in three months, making it the third highest-grossing film in China and the first highest-grossing animated film in China at the time. As of November 29, 2021, Ne Zha was still the 4th highest-grossing film in China. As of August 2019, the film is the highest-grossing animated film in China[7], the worldwide highest-grossing non-U.S. animated film[8], and the second worldwide highest-grossing non-English-language film of all time at the time of its release. With a gross of over $742.5 million[9], it was that year's fourth-highest-grossing animated film, and China's all time third-highest-grossing film[10][11].

Nezha began a North American release on 29 August 2019 in select IMAX 3D theaters, before a nationwide rollout on 6 September[12]. It was selected as the Chinese entry for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards[13], becoming the first animated film from China to ever do so[14], but it was not nominated.

Polt[edit]

The aura of heaven and earth condensed into a bead after a thousand years, named Hunyuan Pearl. The bead absorbed the essence of the sun and the moon, and became stronger and stronger, but the good and evil qi became entangled and unclear, so good and evil were not distinguished from right and wrong. Yuan Shi Tian Zun ordered his two disciples, Taiyizhenren and Shen Gong Bao, to go to subdue the Hunyuan bead, but unexpectedly the Hunyuan bead power is unusually strong, Tai Yi Zhen and Shen Gong Bao can not deal with it. Yuan Shi Tian Zun had no choice but to personally refine the hybrid bead, since then the hybrid bead was refined into good pills and evil pills. He put a curse on the evil pill, which will be destroyed by the thunderstorm after three years. The good bead could be reborn as the third son of Li Jing, the commander of Chen Tang Pass, named Nezha. Yuan Shi Tian Zun promised that if Taiyizhenren could teach Nezha and let him assist King Wu in attacking Zhou, Taiyizhenren would be ranked among the twelve Golden Immortals of Kunlun. All this was in the eyes of Shen Gong Bao, hate in the heart, because in the eyes of Shen Gong Bao is the best candidate for the Twelve Golden Immortals.

A day in the sky is a year on earth, Taiyizhenren drunk on the road delayed a few days, so Mrs. Li pregnant for three years but delayed the birth of the child. Finally pregnant for three years, Mrs. Li was about to give birth, but Shen Gongbao secretly used a charm that can control people to manipulate the midwife to replace the good beads with evil beads. The good beads were stolen by him and brought to the Dragon King of the East China Sea, and gave birth to the Dragon King's son. The evil beads went into Mrs. Li's belly to give birth to Nezha. The people of Chen Tang Pass have been defending themselves against the demons for generations, and the human race and the demons have been fighting each other for generations. The people collectively ask Li Jing to kill the evil child for the greater good, and Taiyizhenren urges Li Jing to kill Nezha because they believe that the demonic Nezha will lose his senses and that life will be ruined. The couple promised to keep Nezha at home, but Taiyizhenren gave Nezha a magic circle to seal Nezha's demonic nature. But Taiyizhenren tells them that the evil ball has been cursed to die at the age of three and that he is incapable of uncovering the curse. Li has no choice but to beg Taiyizhenren to take himself to the Void Gate to beg Yuan Shi Tian Zun to take back the curse. However, Yuan Shi Tina Zun was in seclusion writing the list of Gods so no one could see him. The Chang Sheng Yun, who was guarding the Gate of Emptiness, sympathized with Li and gave him a charm that would allow his relatives to be struck by lightning instead of Nezha.

Li Jing and his wife asked Ne Zha to learn spells from Taiyizhenren. Nezha is very resistant and Mrs. Li has no choice but to lie to him that he is the reincarnation of the beads of goodness and must study hard in order to take on the responsibility of protecting the people. Two years later Nezha considered himself to be highly competent, but because he was born with magical powers, he could not control his power when he was decimating demons and could easily injure civilians by accident. But once again, Nezha sneaks out of his home and runs right into a demon from the sea. The demon captures a little girl on the way to escape, but the villagers mistakenly think that Nezha has captured the child. When the demon finally escaped to the sea, a mysterious man appeared and chased the demon away. Nezha is very unconvinced and fights with the mysterious man, but eventually they join forces to subdue the demon and save the little girl. Nezha makes a friend for the first time and invites the mystery man to his third birthday party. Suddenly the villagers and Li Jing arrive and the mysterious man quickly leaves, seeing only Nezha and the little girl so they misunderstand Nezha once again. Nezha is locked into his room.

The mystery man, named Aobing, is the third prince of the dragon king who was reincarnated as the bead of goodness that was stolen at the beginning. His father hatched a plot to save the entire dragon family. As long as Aobing can kill the evil bead reincarnation of Nezha, the dragon family will be forgiven by God from the darkness of the underwater region back to the heavenly court.

When Nezha's third birthday banquet begins, Shengongbao dislodges Nezha's Qiankun circle, so Nezha loses his mind and starts attacking his parents. However, Aobing cannot bear to see Nezha hurt his parents and chooses to protect Mr. and Mrs. Jing Li. When Nezha regains his senses, he cannot accept his birth and leaves home, but on the way he accidentally learns that the talisman his father gave him can transfer the thunderbolt to his father, and he finally understands his father's love for him. Nezha quickly rushes back home and begins to fight Aobing and Shengongbao quickly. Aobing believes that Nezha's and his own fate was decided before he was born, and Nezha confirms that he is the only one who can decide his own fate. Nezha doesn't want to drag his parents down, so he chooses to fight the thunder alone, and Aobing eventually comes to his senses and chooses to help his friend fight fate together. Eventually their bodies are destroyed but their souls are protected by Taiyizhenren with treasures.

Production[edit]

Inspiration[edit]

Director Yang Yu has been fond of painting since childhood. In college, he was encouraged by his classmates to study 3d animation. After a period of self-study, he switched to animation.[23]

The theme of "Ne Zha" was chosen by Yang Yu. It was because he was fond of ne Zha, a cartoon produced by Shanghai Film Studio in 1979. The animation is a reminiscence of his childhood. In addition, the adaptation of the original story inspired Yang Yu to think about the possibility and creativity of adapting the story[24].

Production[edit]

With a limited budget, the director found more than 60 small companies to subcontract the production of the film. It took five years and 1,600 people to make the film before it was released.[25]

Nezha was originally designed in more than 100 versions[26], but when initially deciding on the final version, Yang yu and his team chosed "the ugliest character in history". It bluntly wants to "create prejudice and let the audience break it, which is a deepening of the theme of the film."[27]

During the making of the film, the director was perfect in every detail. For example, it took the whole team three months to complete the five-second clip in which Shen Gongbao changed from a human to a leopard.[28]

Post-Production[edit]

Nezha's Magic Boy Descending" is the first Chinese animated film in IMAX[29], and the first animated film in Colorado House to adopt a standardized process, from script creation, split-screening, design drafts, and post-production to operate down the process. It took five years from planning to completion, and 66 versions of the script have been refined. More than 1,600 people were involved in the actual production. Initially, there were more than 5,000 shots in the whole film, three times as many as in ordinary animated films, and the director repeatedly selected and left 2,000 shots. The film ended up with more than 1,800 shots, including 1,318 special effects shots, the most in Chinese animation history[30], with special effects shots accounting for 80% of the total shots. Only the sketch of the scene "four people grabbing the pen in the picture of rivers and mountains" took two months to make. The final few big effects sequences took about three months to test[31]. Because the budget was so small, many large companies were reluctant to accept Nezha's orders and had to distribute them to a large number of smaller companies. The production process involved more than 60 outsourcing companies, using more than 20 special effects teams across the country to collaborate, some good at making clouds, some good at making lightning, and so on. According to many of the outsourcing companies, the animators and special effects artists were particularly frustrated by the high demands. One of the special effects artists who worked on the "Nezha" project resigned after two months of not being able to pass the special effects that turned the "Shen Gong Bao" into a leopard's head. After changing companies, Nezha found a new outsourcing company, his new company, so he continued working on the "Shen Gongpao" and finally completed it[32]. Because he could not afford an action director, Dumpling also served as the action director for the main characters of the film, including Nezha, Ao Beng, and Shen Gongpao[33]. The entire film was produced on July 5[34].

Release[edit]

"Nezha Birth of the demon child Nezha" was originally scheduled to be released in China on August 16, 2019[35]., but it was announced that it had been upgraded to 7 due to the withdrawal of many films due to various reasons and the confidence in their own quality. It was officially released in mainland China in the form of 3D, IMAX 3D and China Giant Screen 3D[36]. Prior to this, the film had been screened on a large scale across China from July 13. The film was originally scheduled to be released in mainland China on August 26. Due to the strong box office momentum, the distributor decided on August 14 to extend the release for one month to September 26[37], and then for another month to 26 October[38]. The film will be re-screened on July 20, 2020, when cinemas in mainland China reopen.

Box office[edit]

The pre-sale box office of Ne Zha exceeded 30 million yuan on the first day after its release, and the total pre-sale box office of the film combined with the pre-sale box office of the film surpassed 100 million yuan[42].

It has surpassed Zootopia's $220 million haul after eight days in theaters to become the highest-grossing animated film in China[43].

Background[edit]

Li Jing and his wife are the epitome of modern parenting: Mrs. Yin, who has no time for Nezha's growth, and Li Jing, the stern father who keeps Nezha in his house, actually have an unspeakable but deep fatherly love, the most profound emotions portrayed in these films stemming from the tolerance and support of his parents when he was first animated. Ao Bing, as Nezha's only friend, is also a man who grew up in solitude: carrying a mission and choosing between good and evil. In the public perception of the immortal style of the Taoist real person, speaking a unique Sichuan dialect, because the myth of the real person's dojo is located in the JiangYu City, Sichuan QianYuan Mountain Golden Light Cave. Tai Yi Zhen Ren is also an important character in the film to take over the turn. The image of the bounding beast responsible for guarding Nezha in the film is a reference to an artifact from the Yin Shang period unearthed at the Jinsha site in Sichuan.

The image of "Xionghaizi" in the movie comes from the original work. The director JiaoZi removed the things that did not conform to the values of contemporary world outlook and became an idea acceptable to modern people, and finally gave Nezha a central idea of "breaking prejudice, disobeying fate, and reversing fate".  In the original "Investiture of the Gods", Nezha was reincarnated as a disciple of the Tai Yi Zhen Ren to Li Jing's third son, and Li Jing was also up to this matter. This invisibly created a gap between the father and son. The setting of Nezha's image as a "Xionghaizi" also comes from the original work. In the original work, Nezha was never unreasonable, and he would act whenever he disagreed, while the East Dragon King Ao Guang was a neutral character instead. The third prince of the Dragon King was skinned and cramped only because he came forward to stop Nezha from doing mischief in the East China Sea. Not only that, in the original work, the plot of Nezha's "cutting the meat to return to the mother, eviscerating the bones to return to the father" is also very bloody and violent, not suitable for minors to watch and does not match our modern values and worldview, so the director Jiao Zi made innovations on these foundations to create a brand new image of Nezha.[44].

When Taiyi gave Nezha Huntianling and Huojian spear at the birthday banquet, Huntianling's spear dance was played when Nezha Conquers the Dragon King. And many images in the movie are also tributes to Nezha in the sea, such as the image of Hai Yesha, Ao Bing's weapon hammer, the scene of Nezha being a little girl, and the appearance of the dragon king Ao Guang on a pillar when he appeared. Nezha asked Hai Yesha to shout "Let go of that girl" as a tribute to Stephen Chow's films "Kung Fu" and "Love on Delivery At the end of the film, when Nezha fought against Tianlei, the final words of Taiyi, "I don't know if I can stand it," comes from the lines of the final battle of the three senior brothers in "Shaolin Soccer". The "Self-cultivation of Immortals" watched by Taiyi is from "An Actor Prepares" watched by Yin Tianqiu of "The King of Comedy". In the map of Jiangshan Sheji, the appearance of the four people rolling into a ball is a tribute to the famous works "Hit, Hit a Big Watermelon" and computer game 3D Pinball. [45].

Themes[edit]

The theme of this movie is "breaking fate". The movie shows the uncertainty of fate by creating two antagonistic characters. Through his efforts, Nezha has changed the way others view him and changed his own fate. The movie wants to show that you don't have to follow fate, that you can be your own hero[46]. The creators believe that animation is not just for younger audiences, and they want to broaden Ne Zha's audience. , making him popular with all ages[46][47].

Film Reviews[edit]

The film is a bold innovation from its predecessor, retaining the essence of traditional Chinese culture while adding popular elements to make the culture it is meant to present more accessible to audiences. It breaks down stereotypes and emphasizes the independence of the self, while taking into account a metaphorical reality. There is a lot of worldly ugliness in the film, and many people are more willing to believe hearsay than the truth, and then look at people with tinted glasses. The rebellious superhero, although seemingly rebellious to tradition, still retains the most righteous blood and emotion, and still has dedication and commitment to the values of Chinese culture[48].

The film's rebellion is not about chicken blood or chicken soup. The film is not a chicken blood or chicken soup story, but a very detailed and convincing portrayal of Nezha's journey. In addition, the screenwriter cleverly uses Ao C as a counterpoint to Ne Zha, highlighting the theme that man or devil is an independent choice, not a destiny[49].

The film is a subversive adaptation of the classic "Nezha Haunts the Sea," but it tells a familiar yet fresh, heartfelt, and touching "Chinese story" in a highly accomplished and watchable way. Audiences of all ages love and buy the film, not only for the stunning Chinese-style visual effects, but also for the resonance between the fate of the characters and their own life experiences[50].
