Guideline and policy news

• An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
• A request for comment closed with a consensus that the {{promising draft}} template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

Technical news

• Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
• Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon () in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
• IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June). This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.

Miscellaneous

• Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

WP:UAA reports on users with no edits

Generally, there is no reason to report usernames with no edits whatsoever. Per WP:UAAI: "Wait until the user edits. Do not report a user that hasn't edited unless they are clearly a vandal. We do not want to welcome productive editors with a report at UAA, nor do we want to waste our time dealing with accounts that may never be used." The exceptions are obvious hate speech or names that attack a living person/Wikipedia editor, those are blockable even without any edits, but other run-of-the-mill violations need not be reported unless and until they at least attempt to edit, and you should be able to clearly explain what the problem is if it is not immediately evident.

For whatever reason, every day dozens, if not hundreds of accounts are created that never make one single edit. It is our responsibility as admins to conscientiously review every report a user makes at UAA, so we have to check for contribs, deleted contribs, and tripping of the edit filter for every one of these reports, only to find out there's nothing there and therefore no problem to be solved. So we add the {{wait}} tag to the report, it goes to WP:UAA/HP for a week or more, and must then be reviewed again to see if the account has since become active before removing it. That's time that could be spent doing more productive things, but you basically obligate admins to do it by making such reports. It’s also worth noting that this report was declined anyway because containing “sexy” is not a blatant violation of the username policy. What is and is not offensive is of course highly subjective, but this is pretty mild stuff and not worthy of an immediate block with no warning. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:48, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Chirp mass (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

The chirp mass page jumped right in to an in-line mathematical definition of chirp mass, citing two papers about 2nd order and higher post-Newtonian expansions. The first does not mention chirp mass. The second mentions it once in passing, defining it differently than the page did. I replaced these with an earlier paper that actually defines the chirp mass and explains its utility (I admittedly messed up a copy paste, so this citation was garbled..., I was correcting it when I noticed your revert)

The page also had no section headers or ToC. I added some introductory material, and moved the mathematical definitions under headers below. The page used numbered equations and an imperative voice to point out an algebraic manipulation and a differential equation solution method, something I don't think I've ever seen before on Wikipedia. I removed the equation numbers, and that bit of commentary. They explained a data analysis method of fitting a line to a plot to determine the chirp mass, which while it would work is not standard practice.

There were some other citations that weren't primary sources, which I removed or replaced. I added two other expressions for chirp mass in terms of standard mass parameters.

I thought I improved the format and readability of the page. I removed a bunch of extraneous stuff, and put the definitional material front and center.

IAR states "if a rule prevents you from improving the encyclopedia, ignore it." In this case, doing it would be a violation of RBI and DENY but has high chances of improving the encyclopedia. Also, please don't feed the trolls or add tags where policy asks that admins be the one to do it. There's a reason we typically don't tag accounts like this. WP:3X was put in place primarily to 1) stop the growing trend of AN bans for repeat sockmasters that had no chance of getting unblocked anyway 2) to clarify for admins and CUs that users who have repeatedly socked and were at one point good faith contributors were banned and would need community discussion to unblock: A Den Jentyl Ettien Avel Dysklyver is a type of user where if 3X had existed at the time, a discussion would not have been needed to ban him, but the tagging and the policy are helpful in clarifying things moving forward both locally and globally.

3X specifically asks that admins be the ones doing the tagging because there is a lot of discretion involved here, and so far, it is typically admins who are also SPI regulars who deal with it.​ TonyBallioni (talk) 18:07, 21 July 2018 (UTC)

GA nomination for Kratos (mythology)

Hello! I have no idea if you would be interested in this, but I recently nominated the article Kratos (mythology) for "Good Article" status. I have never played God of War, nor do I want to, but I frequently write articles about Greek mythology. I happened to notice that the article Kratos (mythology) was receiving over a thousand views each day, even though the entire text of the article at the time was only three sentences long, making it probably the most viewed mythology-related stub on Wikipedia. I massively expanded the article with information from reliable sources, adding information about his role and characterization in Prometheus Bound as well as references and depictions in other works of ancient Greek and modern literature and art, and I have now nominated it for "Good Article" status. I noticed that you have written quite a lengthy article about the video game character and, although I know that the video game character does not really have much connection to the actual god in Greek mythology, I thought I would ask to see if you might be interested in reviewing it, or at least looking at it, since users willing to review articles for GA status are generally very difficult to come by these days. --Katolophyromai (talk) 01:34, 26 July 2018 (UTC)

You say you are French, clearly you have no clue of the day to day political shifts of my southern African country of Malawi. Our vice president no longer identifies himself apart of the ruling DPP and has broken off with a splinter cell deamed the UTM, in fact your regressive "unhelpful" deleting of a crucial edit that fits the current political dispensation of Malawian politics. It is people like you who ruin competent edits of pages that frankly you have no clue about, within the article it mentions the same information I changed to suit the same narrative. Redirect categorization

Hey! You've been doing great work at WP:AFC/R recently! However, I wanted to humbly ask if you'd be willing to pay a little more attention to which Rcat you apply to the redirects you create there. You seem to often default to {{R from alternative name}}. My personal experience is that, 19 times out of 20, there's a more specific Rcat that better applies. {{R from modification}} is a specific one that I'd like to bring to your attention; titles that are variations in punctuation and/or word order should use this one instead of alternative name. Often, applying the right Rcat is a matter of knowing it exists, so {{Rcat functional index}} is a good place to look if you aren't sure, and if you're really determined, Wikipedia:Template messages/Redirect pages includes a list of every obscure Rcat template that exists. I certainly won't fault you for not using the latter, but the former has a lot of good ones. Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. ()

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules

• New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
• Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
• Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.

Editathons

• Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

• The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.
