Mary English (née Mary Hollingsworth (DOB/DOD), was a Massachusetts woman accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. Mary was the wife of Philip English, one of the richest men in the area. She was arrested and imprisoned, but escaped to New York with her husband before she could be formally tried.

Early Life[edit]

Mary's mother had previously been accused of witchcraft, and witchcraft was often assumed to run in families.[1]

Salem Witch Trials[edit]

Mary was formally accused by Thomas Putnam on behalf of four Salem girls on April 20, 1692, and arrested the following day. [1]
