Tilley finished there in 1986 and a year later, before beginning his career as a stand-up comedian he began studying law for eleven years and obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree from Monash University.[4]

In 1996, he got his first on-air job in radio in a gig where he was known as a man named Vernon on the Grubby and Dee Dee Breakfast Show on Gold 104.3.[citation needed] Later that year he was half of the Hedgeburners with James O'Neil on Triple M Melbourne which broadcasted Mondays - Fridays from 6pm - 9pm.[citation needed]

In 1997, he began co-hosting the 6am-9am breakfast shift on FOX FM with Tracy Bartram entitled Tracy and Matt in the Morning.[5] When Tracy left the station in 2003 to work on her solo stage performance "Illegally Blonde", Tilley continued his breakfast shift with two new co-hosts; Jo Stanley and Chris "Benno" Bennett and renamed the show The Matt, Jo and Benno show. In late 2004, Chris left the show to focus on his stand-up career. From then on the show has been called The Matt and Jo Show.[6]

"Gotcha" Calls[edit]

In early 2005, The Matt and Jo Show introduced a new segment which aired at 7:55am titled "Matt Tilley's Gotcha Calls". The segment features Tilley receiving a e-mail from a listener suggesting to him a person they know to prank phone call them get them ticked off or release information they would rather keep secret. Tilley tends to use several personas during his calls which range from an old elderly and middle-eastern males to well-known Melburnians such as John So and Jeff Kennett. The calls quickly became popular with listeners and the show is now centered around the Gotcha Calls.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the calls, Tilley in association with FOX FM released a CD featuring the best "Gotcha" calls from 2005 which was inevitably titled Cereal Pest The album was released in November 2005 and went to number one on the Victorian ARIA Charts and raised over $160,000 AUD for the Mercy Womens Hospital in Heidelberg. [9] The album was also nominated for the Best Comedy Release award at the 2006 ARIA Awards. [10]

The Gotcha Calls continued throughout 2006 with popularity remaining strong which spawned a two disc CD sequel of his Cereal Pest album which was released a year later on October 21, 2006. It reached number one on the Victorian ARIA Charts and number four on the national charts receiving gold certification. It raised over $206,000 for the Royal Women's Hospital in Carlton.
