The Pauliteiros de Miranda are groups of men who dance traditional rhythms from the Land of Miranda, in the northeast of Portugal, in the Trás-os-Montes region. The name "pauliteiro" derives from "paulito."
The Pauliteiros are the practitioners of the warrior dance characteristic of the Lands of Miranda, called the stick dance, representative of local historical moments accompanied by the sounds of bagpipes, snare drum, and bass drum. It also has the peculiarity of being danced by eight men (more recently also danced by women) who wear embroidered skirts, linen shirts, a brown vest, leather boots, woolen socks, and a hat that can be decorated with flowers. Finally, they use two sticks (palos) with which these dancers perform a series of different coordinated steps and movements.
The musical repertoire of the stick dance is called "lhaços," and it consists of music, text, and choreography.
They are called 'pauliteiros' because they use sticks to play with dances.
