In his time at Giverny, Monet completed over 250 paintings depicting various aspects of his garden.[1] Of these, at least 26 are views of the Japanese footbridge the original series of which he began in 1889.[2][3]

In each of the paintings from the Japanese Footbridge series, the bridge is the main focus of the composition and in many, the bridge spans the entire width of the painting. [4]

The original series started with Japanese Footbridge, Giverny (The Bridge in Monet's Garden) in 1895 to 1896, and ended with The Bridge Over the Water-Lily Pond in 1905.[7]

He later revisited the subject in a series of less naturalistic paintings that feature dense swirls and loose strokes of color.[10] This later series began in 1918 and ended with The Japanese Bridge at Giverny which was painted between 1918 and 1926.[7]
