Sailor Astarte[edit]

A Senshi who only appeared in the musicals, little is known about her. She has moon-based powers and moves to Tokyo from Transylvania. She is also taken over by the spirit of villain named Dark Cain, similar to how Hotaru Tomoe was taken over by Mistress 9. Her civilian name is Shiva Shingetsu. She has only been portrayed by Aya Hosoda.

She was an important character in both Kessen / Transylvania No Mori - Shin Toujou! Chibi Moon wo Mamoru Senshi-tachi and the subsequent kaiteiban, Saikyou no Kataki Dark Cain no Nazo. Death Vulcan appeared in later musicals, but Siva/Astarte herself did not make an appearance.

Information[edit]

Sailor Astarte is the Senshi form of first-year Juuban High School student Shiva Shingetsu Astarte who transfered from Transylvania. She is shy and withdrawn, as well as apprehensive about meeting the other Sailor Senshi. It became apparent very soon after they first met her that she was under control of Lilith of Darkness, and knew about the plans she had for the Senshi and Vampir. She was possessed by another character, Dark Cain and then later by the good side of the planet Vulcan. It is unknown how aware Shiva/Astarte is aware of the actions of her other-selves.

Despite Lilith's power over her, she revealed herself to be a Sailor Senshi to the others at the end of the first half of the musical. Because she was the "new moon soldier", she was linked mystically to Sailor Moon. In addition, she was powerful enough that she almost killed Giles de Rais alone, who certainly would have died had he not escaped at the last moment. As the musical progressed, however, Astarte's power became weaker, and eventually she was no longer able to keep her transformation or her original self, which was increasingly taken over by Dark Cain.

Ultimately, she lost her soul to Lilith and became Dark Cain for good. Sailor Moon, who had believed in her to the end, was unable to save her even when Lilith was defeated. Sailor Astarte's body returned in Chou Wakusei Death Vulcan no Fuuin this time, possesed by the Good side of the planet Vulcan. Dark Cain had aquired a homonculous body between the two musicals.

Attacks and Transformations[edit]

  • Moon Astarte Power, Make Up! - This is believed to be the transformation phrase Shiva Shingetsu used to become Sailor Astarte. The only time she was seen transforming, she was only able to say "Moon Astar-" before being struck unconscious as Death Vulcan's spirit controlled her.
  • Solomon Jihad - An offensive beam attack, which Astarte summoned by holding her open hand with her palm towards the enemy.
  • Solomon Birth - A power which revived the fallen Sailor Senshi after they were struck down by the Samael Sword.

Uniform[edit]

Sailor Astarte's main colors are red and yellow. Her boots are the in same style as those of that Sailors Moon, Mercury, and Pluto. They are dark red like her skirt and collar. The tip of her boots are colored greyish blue and the tops of it are yellow. She also wears a yellow underskirt and has yellow elbow pads on her gloves. Her bow is unique as it is half yellow and half blackish bronze. Her tiara jewel color is red, and her choker is dark red. One of most unique feature of her senshi uniform is the symbol in the middle of her bow and choker, a red circle with 4 yellow half spheres within it.

Impact[edit]

As Sailor Astarte was a one-time character, her ultimate impact on plots before and after Transylvania is extremely limited. Even in the musical she was in, her role was very limited and her time on stage was approximately eight minutes.

As a result, much about her is unknown. She had apparently lived for a very long time, and if she was a true Sailor Senshi she might have also known about the Silver Millennium. However, most of this is speculation, and nothing past what was given in the musicals can be confirmed.

Queen Beryl[edit]

left|thumbnail|150px|Queen Beryl as seen in the anime. Queen Beryl (クイン・ベリル, Kuin Beriru) is the first major villain in every version of the Sailor Moon series. Beryl has immense magical power, but she uses most of it to channel the life energy harvested by her servants to the entity called Queen Metaria.

In most versions of the story, she has the ability to corrupt others into serving the powers of darkness. Her generals, for instance, were once the bodyguards and best friends of Prince Endymion, and in most versions of the story she is able to use her powers to sway Tuxedo Mask into her service.

In the manga, Beryl was a beautiful girl on Earth during the age of the Silver Millennium. She is shown holding a staff and kneeling before a cauldron, so it is possible (but not known for certain) that she had some kind of power even then. Beryl was in love with Prince Endymion, but her love was unreturned; when she discovered Endymion with Princess Serenity of the moon, she was crushed. She later states that having Endymion was her sole reason for siding with the evil force from the sun, Queen Metaria. She was corrupted and empowered by Metaria, and used her new powers to mobilize the Earth in a war against their protectors, the Moon Kingdom.

Beryl killed Prince Endymion as he was trying to protect Princess Serenity, leading to the princess's own suicide. At some point after this, Sailor Venus killed Beryl with the holy moon sword. Queen Serenity, greatly weakened, sealed away Metaria again, and before dying sent the whole of her Kingdom to be reincarnated on Earth.[1]

Beryl is stated to be "reborn" when the Senshi meet her again in the 20th century. She became Queen of the Dark Kingdom, communicating with Queen Metaria and wielding her reincarnated generals Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite to find the Silver Crystal and defeat the newly-awakened Sailor Soldiers.

Queen Beryl was able to summon the reincarnated Prince Endymion (Tuxedo Mask) to her side, but only after he had been killed and merely existed as a mindless zombie. In the end she failed to attain the Mystical Silver Crystal, and was again killed by Sailor Venus who drove a sword through her body. As she fell, she said Endymion's name, and murmured that she had always just been watching him.

She is portrayed in a more tragic light in the manga than she is in the anime, with a brief scene of personal regret knowing that she can no longer turn back.

In the anime, Queen Beryl is the mastermind behind the various attacks against the citizens of Tokyo while Sailor Moon, and later the other Sailor Soldiers, are searching for the Moon Princess. She also kidnaps and brainwashes Prince Endymion in order to force him to kill his lover. But when he breaks free of her control and attacks her she lies in a swoon and begs Queen Metaria for more power, which results in Beryl becoming Metaria's vessel for the destruction everything on Earth. Queen Beryl is soon vaporised along with Metaria when Sailor Moon, who has transformed into Princess Serenity, combines the power of the Silver Crystal with that of the Moon Stick.

right|thumbnail|Queen Beryl as seen in PGSM. In the live-action series, as in the manga, Beryl sends out her Shitennou to collect energy for Metaria, find the princess, and obtain the Silver Crystal. Beryl had problems, however: Jadeite and Nephrite were rivals for her affections; Zoisite was more loyal to Prince Endymion than to her; and Kunzite had set his sights on taking Queen Metaria's power for himself. However, it was soon revealed that Beryl had revived the four and used her magic to bring them into her service, though only Jadeite and Nephrite are completely under her spell as they have forgotten their past memories. At one point, Beryl creates a shadow of herself, Mio Kuroki (Kuroki Mio), who sets out to ruin Usagi Tsukino's reputation while being Beryl's eyes and ears.

When she learns that Mamoru Chiba was Endymion, Beryl forces him to come with her by showing him that she can easily kill the Shitennou, with Nephrite as an example. Once she has the object of her desire under her services, Beryl has Jadeite implant an item in Mamoru's body that will shorten his life when he is with Usagi. However, Mamoru still risks his life for Usagi, to Beryl's dismay. Even more, thanks to Usagi's overuse of the Silver Crystal, Beryl loses control over Metaria's actions. She dies in the finale when her castle crumbles under the stress of a distraught Princess using the Silver Crystal to destroy the world. However, for all her sadness she is not alone, as Jadeite stays by her side after she removes her mind-control spell on him, claiming that Beryl is his master by choice.

Beryl's original form appears, blurrily, in a flashback in the later episodes of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. Beryl's original form also appears in the manga, where she wears a gypsy-like outfit. [1] In the manga her original form had black hair, but in PGSM her hair was red in her original form.

In the original Japanese anime, Beryl is voiced by Keiko Han, who also voices Luna. During recording, this contrast resulted in occasional fits of giggles among the cast when she would change from Luna's cute, catlike voice to the deep, evil tones of Queen Beryl. In the English dub, the character was played by Naz Edwards.

In the stage musicals, Queen Beryl has been played by two actresses: Yuri Nishina and Akiko Miyazawa (who previously played Sailor Venus). In the live action series, she is played by adult film star Aya Sugimoto.

English Dub[edit]

In the English-dubbed anime no mention is given to her origin and she is only said to be the ruler of the Negaverse, an evil alternate dimension, from which she was somehow able to escape in order to attack this dimension. Yet while she is an extra-dimensional monster in human form that was never born on Earth, it can be assumed that this Beryl has a similar origin because when she sees Tuxedo Mask without his mask, she recognizes his face and seeks to claim him as her own. Her love for Endymion is not mentioned; indeed, she does not even know anything about love, vaguely saying that she has heard of it when Jadeite mentions it as a human phenomenon. She is, however, capable of carnal lust, as seen with her attraction with Darien/Mamoru.

A key difference between the American Beryl and her Japanese counterpart, is that, with the demotion of Metaria to the American Negaforce, Beryl is much more assertive, vindictive, power hungry, and possessive. (When towards the end of the first season, Darien/Mamoru is freed from mind control, she shouts "Traitor!" and kills him with a stone spear, screaming "You are mine!") In the Japanese original, Beryl was content to serve Metaria and revive her so that Metaria could rule the world. Her chief motivation was loyalty to Metaria and misguided infatuation for Mamorou. In the English-dub, she takes Metaria/the Negaforce's rulership and rules the Negaverse in her own name. She is an almost Anti-Monitor like individual capable of carrying grudges a millennia, who not only rules an entire demon inhabited universe of evil, Hell in all but name, but seeks to either enslave or destroy the entire (good) universe for herself and nobody else. Aside from universal domination and/or genocide, her chief motivation there was to avenge her defeat one thousand years ago at the hands of her archenemy, Queen Serenity, whom she vowed to have "begging for mercy!" She looked down on her daughter, Sailor Moon as being a nuisance at best. She was supreme leader and junior partner to her advisor, the Negaforce.

Also unlike her counterparts, there was almost no sympathy extended to her. The sole exception was when she recalled Queen Serenity imprisoning the Seven Shadows, Naz Edwards intoned a sad voice when she read "they were cast into the Earth's atmosphere..." This shows that while the American Beryl is the more ruthless of the various incarnations, she is still (barely) capable of feeling genuine empathy for others, even if those others are vicious monsters.

At the end of the season Beryl is said to be merely banished back to the Negaverse when Sailor Moon defeats her. While the narrator who opened the first season, opens the second season reiterating that information, there is also a continuity error when Artemis mentions during the second series that Queen Beryl had been "completely destroyed." (Anne and Alan also mention her, saying that she had told them about the Earth. They imply that all villains who appear thereafter are being dispatched by Queen Beryl as revenge and it is supported by how later villains mention Negapower and Negamoon.)
