Kanonersky Island is an island in mid-west St. Petersburg, Russia.[1] It's original name before being changed was Kissasaari Finnish for "Cat Island" [2] During the Great Northern War it was used as a training ground for soldiers. [3] During this time it was named the modern Kanonervsky, after gunners.[4] The island during Soviet times was the home of many shipyard workers.[5]The island was also featrued in a Soviet cinema in the movie The Boys From Kanonersky (Ребята с Канонерского) Rebyata s kanonerskogo[6]"Kanonerky was cut off from the rest of the city until a tunnel was built in 1983 to connect it easily to the rest of the population. [7] The tunnel also brought more outsiders which contributes to the high amount of litter on the shore.[8] Throughout the 90's it also served as a popular hub for organized crime.[9] Modern day the island has a very small population.[10] The population decreased by 4,000 after a new highway was set to be builtCite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page).
