Tommi Schmitt (2022)

Thomas “Tommi“ Schmitt (born January 26, 1989, in Detmold) is a German author, columnist, podcaster and television host. He has been running the comedy podcast Gemischtes Hack and the TV show Studio Schmitt for several years.

Life[edit]

In 2008, he graduated from the Gymnasium Leopoldinum, a high school in Detmold. After his community service, he studied media communications and journalism at the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands [1], a college in Cologne and did a traineeship in the press department of the Borussia Mönchengladback soccer club following his undergraduate studies. Subsequently, he abandoned his master studies in Hanover in favor of his career as a comedy writer. [2]

Career[edit]

Schmitt already started writing jokes for TV total during his studies. He eventually moved from Hanover to Cologne in order to do freelance work for German comedy formats.[3] Among other shows, he worked for Luke Mockridge's show Luke! die Woche und ich and for Late Night Berlin with Klaas Heufer-Umlauf.[2]

Schmitt became more widely known through the weekly podcast Gemischtes Hack, which he has been hosting together with Berlin comedian Felix Lobrecht since 2017. As of September 2019, Spotify holds the exclusive rights to the podcast.[4]Gemischtes Hack is one of the most listened-to audio formats in the German-speaking world [5] and was the third most streamed podcast worldwide on Spotify in 2019.[6] Some of the podcast’s actions receive great response on social media, such as the ironic hashtag #unsereweiber, which expresses solidarity with the Germany women’s national football team and denounces sexism towards women’s sports. The action was picked up by the Sportschau and the hashtag was shared by players of the team.[7]

In June 2019, the WDR station 1LIVE Comedy launched the weekly YouTube format Was machen Sachen?, in which Tommi Schmitt und Felix Lobrecht answer absurd questions.[8] In 2020, Schmitt and Lobrecht not only won the German Comedy Award 2020 for their podcast Gemischtes Hack but also the "1LIVE Comedy Crown“, awarded by the radio station 1Live.[9]

Since April 2021, Tommi Schmitt is hosting his own TV show on ZDFneo, Studio Schmitt, in which he satirically addresses topics such as politics and pop culture.[10] [11] He is also part of the cast of the second season of LOL: Last One Laughing, available on Amazon Prime Video.

Among other magazines and newspapers, Schmitt wrote columns for Stern, Ruhr Nachrichten, 11 Freunde und Würzburg erleben.[12][13][14]

On November 26, 2021, Schmitt released the single Unten kommt die Gurke rein together with Felix Lobrecht and the German party hit singer and music producer Ikke Hüftgold. The single was published under the fictional name Die Sacknähte, evoking a Ballermann band and is based on sound tracks of Lobrecht’s and Schmitt’s joint podcast Gemischtes Hack. The earnings are to be donated to sea rescue in the Mediterranean.[15]

Personal life[edit]

Thomas Schmitt is the son of a doctor and a physiotherapist. He has one brother. Schmitt lives in Cologne.[16] Since 2020, Schmitt and the influencer Caro Daur have been a couple.[17]
