Nick Martin is an award winning British journalist who is currently Sky News’ People and Politics Correspondent. [1]
He was named Specialist Journalist of the Year at the Royal Television Society awards in 2021 for his reporting of the Covid-19 pandemic.[2] He was nominated in the same category in 2022 and in 2024. [3]
He reports from around the UK on the impact that decisions made by politicians have on people in the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Career
[edit]Martin was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in June 1978. His father worked as a draughtsman in the shipyards on the River Tyne and his mother was a receptionist. In March 1995, his father died suddenty aged 48. [4]
In 1996, Martin joined his local newspaper Whitley Bay News Guardian as a trianee reporter. He was named North East Weekly Newspaper Journalist of the Year and UK Newcomer of the Year for his coverage of the murder of a Finnish-born exchange student [5]
In 2002 he joined ITV Border as a producer and later became a reporter and presenter.
In 2006 he joined Channel 4 News as north of England Correspondent. In 2010, he won TV Story of the Year at the Foreign Press Associaton awards in recognition of a six-month long investigation into baby trafficking from Mexico to the United States. His film prompted a cross-border federal investigation. [6]
