Contemporary: 21st Century Philippine Literature[edit]

FH Bataan (Smaller and Smaller Circles)[edit]

About the author[edit]

F.H Batacan is a Filipino Journalist and writer; her genre is crime-fiction. She was born in Manila and graduated at University of the Philippines with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Master of Arts in Art History. She worked for 10 years in the Philippine Intelligence Community, before shifting her efforts to Broadcast Journalism. Her first book, Smaller and Smaller Circles won the Philippine National Book Award and is regarded as the Philippine crime novel, it also won the Grand Prize for the English Novel in 1999 Palanca Awards, Manila Critics Circle National Book Award and the Madrigal-Gonzalez Best First Book Award.

Why they are the GOAT?[edit]

The book, Smaller and Smaller Circles, was known to be the first of its kind. Back in 1996, the Philippine literary scene was filled to the brim with poetry, prose, short stories and romantic novels. There would be multitudes of writing competitions as writing had become more competitive throughout the 90s, yet a lot of these works would have the same talking points.

FH Batacan, however, was different. After working for a decade in the government’s intelligence agency, getting fed up with what she would describe as complacency and corruption in her workplace, she took a brave first step. And thus, Smaller and Smaller Circles was born. After winning one of our country’s highest literary honors, the novel went on to print 6,000 copies by 2006, a record shattering achievement at the time.  The novel itself is unique in that its, slow but procedural, it activates your mind, offering you a new perspective, something you will rarely see in Filipino media even today.

The novel itself has inspired other writers, authors, and even companies to create their own iterations and stories of this genre. And back in 2017, Smaller and Smaller Circles has even been adapted onto the silver screen. A testament to the skills of FH Batacan and a breath of fresh air in Filipino Media.

Lualhati Bautista (Bata-bata, Gapo, Dekada '70)[edit]

About the author[edit]

Bautista was born in Tondo Manila,  Philippines on December 2, 1945. She was appointed a national fellow for fiction by the University of the Philippines Creative Writing Center in 1986. Although she used to enter writing contests, she is now one of the judges. Her writing is recognized for its exploration of feminist and sociopolitical concerns. One of today's most sought-after authors is Ms. Lualhati Bautista.

Why they are the GOAT?[edit]

Lualhati Bautista, a novelist, had proven herself deserving of such recognition. She is too much of an artist to be merely considered a storyteller, and too much of a visionary to be merely named an artist. As a writer, Bautista became renowned for her straightforward realism, brave investigation of Philippine women's issues, and fascinating female heroines who deal with challenging circumstances at home and at work with extraordinary grit and strength. Lualhati Bautista is just as relevant today as she was then. Future Filipino generations should read her books, if for no other reason than to inspire them to pursue lives free from tyranny. This alone is reason enough.

His first and osat popular work from his discography, ABNKKBSNPLAko?! was published in 2001 by Visprint Incorporated. This novel is an autobiography of Bob Ong’s life, where he talks about his early childhood days, student life, and work life. His book was a success, and by 2013 had sold 240,000 copies. As said earlier he was known for his humor, and he uses this as a tool to connect to readers with his stories, where Paoplo Manalo stated that the material he uses resonates with this generation of Filipinos at that time. His book ABNKKBSNPLAko?!, was made into a film in 2014 that featured star studded actors such as Jericho Rosales and Andi Eigenmann. His unique perspective on his life and the humor he brought into ABNKKBSNPLAko?!, justifies the perceptions I read about him and his achievements. It brings a nostalgic feel to every Filipino growing up, with his own flavor to it. Miguel Syjuco (Ilustrado)[edit]

About the author[edit]

Miguel Syjuco is a Filipino writer born in Metro Manila. He graduated high school in 1993 from Cebu International School and then proceeded to get his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at Ateneo de Manila University. After this, he went on to complete his MFA from Columbia University and then a PHD in literature at the University of Adelaide. Born into a political family, Syjuco had to run away to be a writer and support himself. He claims one of his main goals is for everyone to pronounce his surname correctly (see-hoo-coh) and introduce Filipino stories and culture globally beyond the ideas of maids, Imelda Marcos, and the guy who shot Versace.

Why they are the GOAT?[edit]

Miguel Syjuco has won 2 major awards in the philippine literature scene. Notably the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Novel in English and the Man Asian Literary Prize.  His work takes on fiction and non fiction with focus on Filipino history. It is filled with surprises and philosophical discussion while managing to include well-placed humor all throughout. His work and him are able to acknowledge what the outside world perceives the Philippines to be, but he never fails to add how we are also so much more. He takes great pride in his country and nationality and for that we think he is the goat.
