About me

I am a 25 year-old male who currently lives in Saint Paul, MN. I received my bachelor's degree (magna cum laude) in history and theology from Hamline University in 2005, with departmental honors in history. At present, I am pursuing my Ph.D. in history at the University of Minnesota in the field of Modern British History, with an emphasis on Britain's involvement in the Balkans, and the Near and Middle East during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I am especially interested in the study of British (et al.) imperialism, the impact of exploration on British foreign policy and its economic power, the pervasiveness of the category of "the East" in the British imagination, and the development of an apparatus of British authority, independent of its borders, that linked the three of these things together.

Academic activity

I have given papers at a number of state, national, and international conferences, and I have written an encyclopedia article on the Transvaal for The Encyclopedia of the Industrial Revolution, a forthcoming print publication from Facts on File. My undergraduate honors thesis is available for checkout at Hamline University: "The Sublime Web: British Extra-Territorial Imperialism and the Ottoman Empire During the Eastern Crisis of 1875-1878." I have also received several research grants, one during my undergraduate years, and two thus far during my graduate years. More information, including my CV, can be found at: [1].

Notable Wikipedia entries

As a professional scholar and educator, I am interested in making Wikipedia a reliable source for myself, my colleagues, and my students. As such, I make changes and additions to articles on a regular basis. I have worked most hard on the following articles:

• Hugh Trevor-Roper, especially the section titled, "Debates on African history"—a section I created, researched, wrote, and update from time to time.
• Gustav Anton von Wietersheim, about a German general active in World War I and World War II—this is an article that I have been building from the ground up, as I have been unable to find any prior source with more than the smallest commentary on him, even though he was an important figure in the German military establishment right up to point that he was dismissed by Hitler in September 1942. Work is ongoing on this article; I have been compiling information on Wietersheim for over a year now, and I will hopefully be able to complete a good entry on him in the next few months.

Non-scholarly info

I also enjoy playing and writing music; I perform less regularly than I used to, but I still play the odd show. In 2003 I played at the Winnipeg Folk Festival in the Youth Performers Program and was subsequently broadcast on CBC Radio. My mentor was Canadian singer-songwriter James Keelaghan. I also play ultimate frisbee, bike, rock climb, and canoe. I enjoy traveling, both for academic and personal purposes, whether it be Chicago or Russia. I grew up in the Minnesota Northwoods, about 30 miles from the Canadian border, and I now live in the beautiful Saint Paul neighborhood of St. Anthony Park, with my beautiful girlfriend and our two cats.
