From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Akwesasne Notes was a very important indigenous editorial during the time of heightened red power activities that was founded in the late sixties. It was founded in the Mohawk Reservation of Akwesasne in northern New York State which also crosses over the St. Lawrence river into Canada near Cornwall. With an extremely bare budget it had a circulation of around 10,000 on average per addition in the 1970s, with editions being sent off in the post to indigenous communities all around the world.Contributors usually wrote for Akwesasne Notes pro-Bono. The paper was an advocate for indigenous rights and reported on on local indigenous issues in Akwesasne such as substance abuse and gambling as well as several global indigenous issues around the world, from articles on Aborigines in Australia, to US government negotiations with Nicaraguan natives.
