G. Babiniotis

International linguistic literature calling Arvanitic a variety of Albanian

ISO 639

According to [1], Arvanitic (identifier: aat) is classified in ISO 639-3 as a member of the "macrolanguage" Albanian. "Macrolanguage" is an intermediate category between a language family and a single language with several dialects. According to [2] it is defined as "clusters of closely-related language varieties that, based on the criteria discussed in 4.2.1, can be considered individual languages, yet in certain usage contexts a single language identity for all is needed [...] a transitional socio-linguistic situation in which sub-communities of a single language community are diverging, creating a need for some purposes to recognize distinct languages while, for other purposes, a single common identity is still valid".

Peter Trudgill

Trudgill (2004:5): "the indegenous Albanian-speaking minority in Greece [...] Linguistically, there is no doubt that the language they speak is a variety of Albanian" Trudgill 1976/77 ("Albanian dialects of Greece")

Brian Joseph

Joseph (1999) (1999:4) "a brother [...] to now-standard Albanian within the Tosk group of Albanian dialects". (1999:3) Arvanitic is part of "the range of diversity within the varieties of speech and language that constitute the whole of Albanian" The use of the name "Shqip" exclusively for "Standard Tosk Albanian" (as opposed to the whole of Albanian) in the graph on p.4, reproduced in Arvanitic language, is marked by Joseph himself (1999:3) as nonstandard terminology!

Hans-Jürgen Sasse
  • Sasse 1985 ("albanische Mundarten Griechenlands" ["Albanian dialects of Greece"])
  • Sasse 1991 ("Albanian language relics in Greece")
Walther Breu (1985, 1990)
