Rodrigo Ely (born 3 November 1993) is a Brazilian footballer who currently plays as a defender for Italian club Milan. At international level he most recently represented Brazil under-23, while previuosly he was capped for Italy under-20 and under-19 thanks to his dual citizenship.

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Ely started his football career in his native Brazil, playing in the youth teams of Juventude and later, Grêmio.[1] In March 2009, he left the side in preparation of a move to Italian Serie A club Milan.[2] However, due to FIFA regulations forbidding international transfers of players under 18 years of age,[3] Milan could not sign him right away and instead, they elected to have him join one of their football academies in Brazil, while waiting for him to be granted an Italian passport,[2] which he was eligible for through his grandmother.[4] In January 2010, he moved to Italy to take part in Milan youth team trainings at Milanello, although he was still not officially registered for the club, since he was still lacking the Italian passport.[5] Finally, in January 2011, after obtaining his Italian passport, Ely signed with Milan.[6] He went on to spend one and a half seasons as part of the club's youth side that reached the final-eight stage of the Primavera league twice in a row.[7][8]

Reggina (2012–2013)[edit]

In July 2012, Ely was sent out on a season-long loan to Serie B side Reggina.[9] He made his professional debut on 12 August, playing the full 90 minutes in a 1–0 Coppa Italia win over Nocerina.[10] About a month later, on 25 September, he also played his first Serie B match, again staying on for the whole 90 minutes in a 0–1 home defeat against Virtus Lanciano.[11][12] From then on, he became a regular in Reggina line-up, finishing the season with 27 league appearances, mostly starts, and one goal.[13]
